Dressing Like The Stars: Grammys 2018

grammys.jpg

Welcome to Dressing Like The Stars. If you are new here, long story short, I’m going to show you how to steal your favorite celeb looks all awards season long.

Can you keep a secret? I was almost going to skip covering the Grammys this year because the fashion is often too haute for real life. Also, I was tired... But it turned out that watching the red carpet arrivals was the best latte I could have had.

I was really floored by the fashion and much like the SAG awards and Golden Globes, the red carpet kept it real! I was really impressed with so many people. But I want to sing the praises of five celebs who really who really stood out the most to me. Here are my favorite Grammy fashion moments of 2018 and how you can emulate them.

Kill It In Purple Boots Like Hailee Steinfeld

It's probably not a coincidence that Pantone's Ultra Violet is the 2018 Color of the Year. But seriously, how amazing were Hailee's purple boots paired with her white dress? It was a risk that was well worth it.

Shine In Silver Like Chrissy Teigen

Metallics had a moment last night. Ashanti, Zuleyka Rivera and Maren Morris all wore metallic dresses. But mamma-to-be Chrissy Teigen simply shined the brightest.

Jack Janelle Monáe's Style

Janelle Monáe's inspired everyone with both her groundbreaking Time's Up Speech and her embroidered tuxedo. It was one of the highlights of the evening.

Look Ravishing In Red Like Camila Cabello

There is nothing more classic Hollywood than a red dress. This is a look that is so easy to for anyone to pull off. Here are few similar dresses. And yes, there is a a plus size option.

Be A Style Star Like Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey's Gucci Dress was EVERYTHING! While I couldn't find a super close dupe, there are so many nice star print dresses available that it is totally possible to re-create this whimsical look yourself.

How To Be A Blonde Bombshell & Fight Brass With Sass

When I was a little girl, if you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up I would have probably said blonde. Luckily, I was able to achieve that goal by high school with a whole lot of bleach on my naturally blah brown hair. I haven’t really gone back since. (Okay, three times, but I think I’m blonde for life now.)

But, being blonde is a commitment. It’s time consuming and expensive. In addition to not being naturally blonde, I have another huge hair problem. Left to its own devices, my hair is dry AF. It also doesn’t grow as long and gorgeous like it appears to for every other woman I know. So, my life, at least in terms of what I focus on from a vanity standpoint, has been a constant battle to achieve a presentable looking head of hair. Yes, it’s annoying, but for the first time in a long time, I think I’m having more good hair days than bad ones.

In my quest for blonde, I’ve tried EVERYTHING. If your hair is blonde, dry and annoying, you don’t have to suffer through what I did. Here are the essentials to being the best blonde you can be.

A Product Squad To Combat Brass

In college, I thought it would be fun to go strawberry blonde. It was cute, but it ruined my hair forever. Ever since, my hair wants to be red and brassy all of the time. It’s a constant battle for a brass-free head.

Beating the brass starts with purple shampoo. But be forewarned, purple shampoo is kind of a lifestyle choice. It’s powerful stuff. My shower sometimes looks like I murdered Barney the Dinosaur.  But if you’re blonde, it’s a necessity.

As you can imagine, I’ve tried ALL THE PURPLE SHAMPOOS. My personal favorite is Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel Wash. It’s doesn’t dry my hair out and the packaging prevents bathtub staining, which is a huge issue with most purple shampoos. If you need an extra purple boost, add the Blonde Angel Conditioner to your routine once a week or more.

Another option is using a toner like Dessange CC Cream. This treatment cuts brass so well, I wouldn’t trust it around a trumpet. Pro tip: actually read the directions before you use this product.

A Conditioner That Works Like A Therapist For Your Hair’s Dryness Issue

Going blonde will make anyone’s hair prone to dryness. I really like Terax Original Crema. It was all the rage in middle school, went away for a few and was recently(ish) re-launched in 2016. Crema is creamy, but doesn’t weigh my hair down. I like to leave it in for a few hours once a week for an extra moisture boost instead of using a mask.

A Special Hair Towel

Although I love my Ralph Lauren towels to dry off my body, regular towels split your ends like a bad divorce. That’s why I use the Laguna Blue towel on my hair. Made of microfiber, it’s anti-bacterial (great if you wash your hair at the gym), eco-friendly, and most importantly (let’s be honest here) it absorbs water twice as fast as a regular towel. Seriously, it’s like the diamond lane for your hair.

Oil For Your Ends At Night

I love Kopari Coconut Sheer Oil. It’s a great multitasker you can use you on your hair, body, face, etc (just don’t eat it). I put a few drops on my palms at night and apply it to my ends before I go to bed. No need to wash off.

Sun Protection

We all use sun protection for our skin (hopefully), but we rarely think of using it for our hair. Despite what you remember from using Sun-In when you were 12, sun is actually the enemy of blonde hair. It will brass it up like a bad jazz band. But you can’t just use your face sunscreen on your hair. (If you were wondering, I tried and it didn’t end well). There are two products I really like for this purpose. One is Fekkai Pre-Soleil Hair Mist. It’s very hydrating and has a UV filter.  It also smells like heaven. If my hair is extra dry or I’m planning on getting it wet, I use Nios Shield SPF 15 Leave-In Conditioner. It’s super creamy and a little work to apply, but it will immediately take away your fear of the ocean or pool destroying your locks.

A Hat (This Is Not A Fashion Tip)

Even with product, I still think the best way to protect your hair is with a hat. I like a straw fedora because they look cute with most swimwear and clothing. These hats from Forever21 and Kate Spade are all you need.

I don’t know what it’s like where you live, but in Los Angeles, the winter is finally over. This has been the longest two months of my life since I moved here eight years ago. It's been non-stop cold and raining since the beginning of the year. I actually cried when I had to buy rain boots at Havaianas, which is a store where I normally buy flip-flops.

Yes, these look like unicorn hooves.

Now that the rain has stopped and I’m finally able to quit dressing in layers, I’m more excited than ever about spring fashion. Remember, it's never too early to start shopping for next season. And it's always an appropriate time to treat yourself, because f-it, it's Friday! Here are six must-have Spring pieces you need right now! ASAP! Seriously, not kidding!

Selfie Leslie Maxi Skort Romper

I have a floral skort romper from Forever 21 (shown in the picture above) that I bought two weeks ago, but it's already sold out. (I know, that sucks I can't wear it without stopped in the street.) So this one from Selfie Leslie at Forever 21 is the next best thing. Florals are everywhere this season and it's my personal belief that you can never have too many rompers. I like that this one has long sleeves, so it's perfect for slightly chilly nights, perhaps with a denim jacket

Miss Selfridge Red Choker Neck One Shoulder Top

Super trendy, Miss Selfridge's choker neck one shoulder top is one of my faves. Miss Selfridge is a UK high street retailer that has just recently become available in the US. Wear this piece now with a motorcycle jacket over your shoulders.

Top Shop Zig Zag Pattern Dress

Featuring a fun, bold stripe pattern, this Top Shop dress makes the top of my list. It will look perfectly appropriate without outerwear until it's warm enough to be worn on its own.

J. Crew Tulle Ball Skirt

When I first saw J. Crew's Tulle Ball Skirt, I actually swooned. Incredibly versatile, it can be worn with a t-shirt, button down, or with something more formal for a big event. It's available in navy as well as a bright mint color. Maybe buy all three.

Sea Linen Tie Tank

Sea's yellow Linen Tie Tank is the color of the season. Beautiful and unique, this is a good investment top that will part of your regular wardrobe rotation for the summer.

Reebok Cardio Crop Top

If there's one trend I'm sure of this season, it's all things sheer. Reebok's crop top might be athleisure, but it's sexy and stylish enough to wear outside of the gym.

F-IT Fridays: Super Casual Chic Edition

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! It’s the Super Bowl, which means you will either be really into the game (go team!), into the commercials (Go Daddy!), the Half-Time Show (go Gaga!) or just happy to socialize and eat wings (go away parentheticals). Whether you are going to watch at someone's house or a bar, it's an occasion not to get dressed up for. But, just because you're going causal, doesn't mean you can't be chic. Here is some inspiration featuring some of my favorite casual pieces. Whether your team wins or not, this look certainly will!
