Dressing Like The Stars: Grammys 2018

grammys.jpg

Welcome to Dressing Like The Stars. If you are new here, long story short, I’m going to show you how to steal your favorite celeb looks all awards season long.

Can you keep a secret? I was almost going to skip covering the Grammys this year because the fashion is often too haute for real life. Also, I was tired... But it turned out that watching the red carpet arrivals was the best latte I could have had.

I was really floored by the fashion and much like the SAG awards and Golden Globes, the red carpet kept it real! I was really impressed with so many people. But I want to sing the praises of five celebs who really who really stood out the most to me. Here are my favorite Grammy fashion moments of 2018 and how you can emulate them.

Kill It In Purple Boots Like Hailee Steinfeld

It's probably not a coincidence that Pantone's Ultra Violet is the 2018 Color of the Year. But seriously, how amazing were Hailee's purple boots paired with her white dress? It was a risk that was well worth it.

Shine In Silver Like Chrissy Teigen

Metallics had a moment last night. Ashanti, Zuleyka Rivera and Maren Morris all wore metallic dresses. But mamma-to-be Chrissy Teigen simply shined the brightest.

Jack Janelle Monáe's Style

Janelle Monáe's inspired everyone with both her groundbreaking Time's Up Speech and her embroidered tuxedo. It was one of the highlights of the evening.

Look Ravishing In Red Like Camila Cabello

There is nothing more classic Hollywood than a red dress. This is a look that is so easy to for anyone to pull off. Here are few similar dresses. And yes, there is a a plus size option.

Be A Style Star Like Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey's Gucci Dress was EVERYTHING! While I couldn't find a super close dupe, there are so many nice star print dresses available that it is totally possible to re-create this whimsical look yourself.

Here are ten fabulous handbags that are MAJORLY discounted right now. And don’t worry if you spent way too much money on other people, there are several budget-friendly options here.

Everything about this bag is to die for. From the signature shape to unique leather and suede patchwork, it’s absolutely stunning. At $1,494, it’s currently 40% off. Seriously, how often does that happen?

Nordstrom Transparent Lace Box Clutch

Are you looking to buy yourself a tiny treat for the cost of brunch? I love this little lace clutch, which at $39.49 is 50% off. It has a chic little chain so you can also wear it on your shoulder. It’s perfect for New Years Eve or maybe even as a bridesmaid gift.

Elizabeth and James Eloise Embossed Field Bag

This bag looks like it is vintage but, it’s not. But for $177, you can fool everyone. I won’t tell anyone if you lie. It will be our secret.

Dressing Like The Stars: Emmy Awards 2017

m sull.jpg

The big winner this year at the 2017 Emmys was fashion. The red carpet was filled with so many beautiful dresses, you know that every stylist was not only on their A-Game, but their clients actually listened. Everyone was so fabulous that I'm not sure I even saw one thing that could have inspired any of the following thoughts—

What were there thinking?

Were they even thinking?

Do they have a brain?

WTF is wrong with this person?

Do they not own a mirror?

Someone call an ambulance!

Nope, it was a night for spectacular fashion, funny jokes and minimal regrets. Here are some of my favorite looks and a few suggestions on how to steal the best styles without getting arrested by the fashion police. (Too much?)

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman reserved her time on the red carpet in a gown from Calvin Klein By Appointment. Book your own style in either a satin and chiffon gown by After Six or this Morgan & Co lace and jersey dress. Both are from Nordstrom.

Samantha Bee

Style made a b-line for Samantha Bee in a Rubin Singer gown. Go for green in a chic long sleeved cutout dress from Cavalli or a slightly more casual frock from Misguided.

Marisa Sullivan

Marisa Sullivan rocked the red carpet in a Mac Dugal dress styled by Ali Levine. While it's hard to find a dupe, this burgundy Alfred Sung Strapless High/Low Sateen Twill Gown puts a slightly more classic spin on her look, while the Fernanda dress by Amanda Uprichard captures the fun .

AMAN-WD795_V1.jpg

Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown's Calvin Klein By Appointment dress did pirouettes around everyone else on the red carpet. ASOS' Mini Tulle Dress is a different spin on the same idea. If you want to be a ballerina but maybe in sneakers or boots, this  J. Crew tulle skirt  is everything!

Amanda Salas

If I had to choose my favorite look of the night, it would be Amanda Salas' one-of-a-kind red lace sheath gown. Styled by Ali Levine, this also happens to be, in my opinion, one of the best looks she's ever styled. Aijek Millie's Lace Gown gets the look pretty close, while the Marie Lace Midi Dress is a little more appropriate for an extra sexy date night.

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley looked almost unrecognizable, but in a good way (obvs) at the Emmys. Her green Ralph Lauren dress had jaws dropping. Create a similar look in a green velvet mermaid gown from Jovani or basically steal it in this Aidan by Aidan Mattox Velvet V-Neck Wrap Evening Gown.

Formal Event Style Ideas For The Formally Confused

Not a day goes by where someone does not post a picture of an outfit on Facebook (mostly in private groups consisting of 99.999% female membership) asking if it is appropriate to wear to a wedding or another large event. After all, if you've only been to two weddings ever, one of which was your second cousin twice removed's third wedding, how are you really supposed to know what to wear? There's no shame in that. But, if you are uncomfortable asking a group of 2,000-20,000 women what they think, just keep it to yourself and keep these guidelines in mind instead.

A Little Black Dress Is Appropriate For Everything

I feel like this is a good rule for life. The classic little black dress is classic for a reason. You will never regret buying one. There is a little black dress for every size, shape, body type and budget. Even if you don't need one at the moment, you should always have one on hand because you never know when you will be invited to a last minute event.

If Black Isn't Your Bag, Try Navy

I love navy because it's a more cheerful version of black. It's equally flattering but a little less serious looking. It's also a little lighter for a daytime or outdoor soirée.

Invest In Your Wardrobe

If you find you are going to formal events every so often with different crowds of people, it's a good investment to buy one or two high-quality dresses you can wear from season to season. Then change it up with different shoes and accessories.

Or Snag A Bargain

If you don't have the budget for an investment dress, you can still look fab.  Here are a few ideas under $100.

But Always Follow This Cardinal Rule: Never Ever Wear White, Cream or Any Shade That Could Be Described As "Bridal" To A Wedding

I get it. You look stunning in ecru, but it’s not your day. It’s the bride's. Don’t risk being the guest that ruined her life. Instead, choose a light or pastel color.

Dressing Like The Stars: Grammys 2017 Edition

The Grammys are generally one of the most interesting nights for awards show fashion because we always expect artists to take risks and shock us. It’s fair to say that every risk with the exception of one really paid off last night. Overall, the red carpet felt more like a runway. With so much high fashion, the vibe was more like the Oscars than the Grammys. Think old Hollywood and less old time rock and roll. Here are some of my favorite looks from the event and similar styles more appropriate for those who give concerts in the smallest of venues, like their showers.

Adele

Adele was a green goddess in Givenchy. You'll want to say hello to these green dresses from 3.1 Phillip Lim and Ali & Jay

Jennifer Lopez

Purple has been the stand out color this awards season and Jennifer Lopez's Ralph and Russo dress was my personal favorite look of the night. Nasty Gal and Boo Hoo have stylistically similar dresses, both of which are affordable, no matter what block you're from.

Charli XCX

Charli XCX rocked the red carpet in Vivienne Westwood. Rock your own event in these ravishing dresses by Faviana and Nicole Miller.

Keltie Knight

Keltie Knight has never looked more stunning. Her Burberry dress shines bright. Consider her style your guide in this dress by Missguided or Amanda Uprichard

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum was anything but plain in Phillip Plein. Shine bright like a super model in a short silver dress from Carla G. or ASOS (plus size).

Soundz

Styled by Ali Levine, Soundz aka the guy who produces Justin Bieber's music, took over the red carpet in a custom burgundy suit from Klein, Epstein and Parker (not to be confused with a law firm of the same name). If you don't have Bieber money (or Bieber girls, or that cool haircut), cover Soundz' style with a tuxedo jacket and pants from ASOS.

Tinashe

Tinashe had lots of panache in Alexander Wang. Cut out and copy her look with Halston Heritage's Hi Lo Crepe Dress .

Margaret Cho

The Fashion Police's Margaret Cho looked anything but lame in a lamé pantsuit. Go for the gold in this blazer from Sinéquanone.

F-IT Fridays: Super Casual Chic Edition

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! It’s the Super Bowl, which means you will either be really into the game (go team!), into the commercials (Go Daddy!), the Half-Time Show (go Gaga!) or just happy to socialize and eat wings (go away parentheticals). Whether you are going to watch at someone's house or a bar, it's an occasion not to get dressed up for. But, just because you're going causal, doesn't mean you can't be chic. Here is some inspiration featuring some of my favorite casual pieces. Whether your team wins or not, this look certainly will!

Dressing Like The Stars: SAG Awards 2017 Edition

To summarize the 2017 SAG Awards in one word, I have to say it was inspirational. And it wasn’t just the speeches. It was the styles. Every single outfit was so incredibly unique. I started the Dressing Like The Stars series as a way to find versions of celebrity award show dresses that would be accessible to people who don’t have entourages or American Express Black cards. But, last night’s outfits were just so super custom that there was not one dress dupe to be found. Trust me, I look EVERYWHERE! But don't be disappointed, there are many dresses that share similar elements. So once you put your own spin on these celeb looks, you're guaranteed to be mistaken for a movie star. Remember to smile when the paparazzi try to take your picture.

Julie Lake

Julie Lake was styled by my favorite celeb stylist, Ali Levine, who put her in a custom dress by Matthew Christopher. Red can be your new black in Amsale's Jaycie Drape Strapless Chiffon Gown.

Viola Davis

In what was my personal favorite look of the night, Viola Davis simply stunned in Vivienne Westwood. While not an exact dupe, this strapless Jill Stuart dress is pretty darn close.

Sophia Bush

Sophia Bush looked marvelous in a magenta dress by Marchesa. Look pretty in your own pink dress from Laundry By Shelli Segal.

Giuliana Rancic

Giuliana Rancic rocked the red carpet in Yousef Al-Jasmi, but you can rock any kind of flooring in this blush beaded gown by Adrianna Papell

Shannon Purser

Shannon Purser looked anything but strange last night in a full on tulle gown. Betsy & Adam's Lace-Trimmed Hi-Lo gown captures her glam in a way that won't terrify your dry cleaner.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman wasn't kidding around in her ready for the runway Gucci gown. Dress The Populations's Elizabeth Sequin Midi
will have you ready for any event

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek was a ray of sunshine in Gucci. Apiece Apart's Reina One Shoulder Ruffle Dress steals the flounce neckline just a few shades away. Choose pink accessories to further Samlafy your look.

Natalie Portman

Mommy-to-be Natalie Portman looked radiant in this bell sleeved Christian Dior dress. Luckily, you don't need a bump to appreciate her maternity style because we all just want to be comfortable sometimes. This ASOS dress is a bit shorter and more casual, but shares a high neckline, bold bell sleeves and has an equally forgiving shape.

Yara Shadidi

Yara Shadidi's Naeem Khan dress was a fashion risk that paid off. While I've rarely seen stripes that work, unless they're Missoni of course, her dress was the exception to the rule. Phoebe Couture's Sleeveless Halter Striped gown has a fun, but sophisticated vibe with vertical stripes, which are frankly more flattering for most body types.

Maisie Williams

Maisie Williams amazed in Charlie Braer. It was one of the most talked about looks of the night. Trust me, people won't shut up when you wear this Faux Wrap Satin Dress by Band of Gypsies.

Dressing Like The Stars: Golden Globes 2017 Edition

Do you ever watch awards shows and wish you could wear your favorite celeb’s dress? I know I do. Even if the only red carpet you walk on is in your living room, we can all be inspired by celeb style. Here are some of the most talked about looks from the 2017 Golden Globe awards along with similar dresses. While they aren’t exact dupes, some are pretty darn close. But, whether you are going to a wedding, party or simply the opening of an envelope, there isn’t one dress here you won’t feel fabulous in. Seriously, prepare for jaws to drop when the paparazzi spots you. And by paparazzi, I mean your friends who take too many selfies.

Sparkle Like Emma Stone

A star in stars, Emma Stone's Valentino dress was one of the most talked about looks of the Golden Globes. Here are some similar dresses that show you don't have to be a movie star to pull off the star dress look.

Blush Jupiter Dress by Privacy Please

Krause Dress by Privacy Please.

Stars Tulle Dress by Mango.

Madeline dress by X By NBD.

Ruffle Critics Like Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood's pink Iris Serban dress was considered a fashion risk.  In my option, it was one worth taking. Here are two dresses guaranteed to ruffle even the toughest critic (your mom or BFF).

Sleeveless Ruffle Dress by MSGM and Sleeveless Ruffle Trim Gown by Jovani.

Plunge Into Style Like Kristen Bell and Mandy Moore

Both Kristen Bell in Jenny Packham and Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan plunged onto the best dressed lists with daring necklines. Dare to wear these sexy black dresses.

Maya Dress by Elizabeth and James.

Devyn Plunging V-Neck Bandeau Detail Gown by BCBG Max Azria.

Black Lace Long-Sleeve Plunge Skater Dress by Missguided.

Plunge Wrap Ties Midi Dress by ASOS.

Shine Bright Like Viola Davis in Yellow

Viola Davis was truly golden for the Golden Globes in Michael Kors. Be golden wherever you are in one of these inspired frocks.

One Shoulder Drape Midi Dress by ASOS and Kassidy Pleated Crepon Maxi Dress by Alice + Olivia.

Look Pretty In Purple Like Hailee Steinfeld and Chrissy Metz

Hailee Steinfeld's Vera Wang dress was my favorite look of the evening. Chrissy Metz also wore a purple dress, in a dark, sophisticated amethyst shade designed by Nathan Paul. Whether you are vying for a violet dress dress like Hailee's or a deeper color like Chrissy's, there are plenty of choices.

Aliki Illusion Yoke Tulle Halter Gown by Amsale.

V-Neck Gown by Monique Lhuillier

Embroidered Lace Sheath Dress by Tadashi Shoji  (also available in plus sizes).

Clark Dress by John & Jenn by Line

A Gift Guide For All The Special Snowflakes In Your Life

They say it’s better to give than receive, but not when gift giving feels like a burden. We all want to give the people we care about (or the people we pretend to care about) meaningful presents, but it’s not always easy. Whether giving a gift is an act of love or simply an obligation, you don’t have to overthink about it any longer because I’ve already done that for you. Here are my favorite gifts for all the difficult people on your list. No matter what your budget is, any one of these gifts will guarantee a smile and potentially a thank you card.

Your Significant Other’s Mom

You Hooked Up 5 Times and Have No Idea Why You’re Even At This Dinner ($)

Even if you are meeting the parents a little sooner than you would have liked to, you still need to bring a nice holiday gift. A personalized Go-Comb is perfect for those occasions when you need to make a statement that won’t affect your bank statement. For $21.99, this personalized comb has a mirror on the back and fits in any wallet. What says, “I actually care,” more than something you had personalized? The Go-Comb is my favorite budget gift for everyone on my list this year.

Sucking Up Chic ($$)

With notes of pomegranate, mandarin, pine, cloves and cinnamon, nothing smells like the holidays more than Nest’s Diffuser. Designed to fit with any décor, this reed diffuser will remind your SO’s mother of how wonderful you are every time she walks past it.

Future Mother-In-Law ($$$)

Kate Spade’s Charlotte Street Platter is one of my favorite gifts of all time. I’ve purchased it twice, once for my mother-in-law and then for myself. If your future mother-in-law is into entertaining, she can never have too many platters. Remember, if you’re probably going to spend the holidays with this woman for the rest of her life, no gesture is too grand.

The Man In Your Life

Dudes are the hardest to buy gifts for. You want them to think you care, but not too much. These ideas are also great for boyfriends, dads, brothers, etc.

Beyond FWB ($)

Treat him to a fancy but affordable grooming product bundle from Dollar Shave Club. While we know this is a gift for him, it’s also a gift for you because he will smell like a clean walk in the woods and not like the “drunk frat dude,” scent so many men’s products are unfortunately infused with.

Boyfriend ($$)

If he’s been carrying around the same old laptop bag since college and now he has a real job, it’s time to help him upgrade. MRKT’s Mateo Briefcase is made from durable felt and vegan micro suede. It fits a laptop and has tons of pockets to help organize his stuff. It’s a serious bag, while being stylish and so not stuffy.

Ring On It Zone ($$$)

If he’s put a ring on it (or is about to), you need to reciprocate. So, go big with a pair of shoes from Beckett Simonon. Featuring a variety of timeless styles, every pair is handcrafted in Europe or South America. Much like your love, these shoes are very high quality and designed to last for years to come.

That Hippie/Vegan/Yogi Person In Your Life

OM ($)

Feel The Love Transformation Cards are like having an entire deck of mirror messages. Because who doesn’t love positive affirmations?

Heart ($$)

Designed by #GirlBoss Peri Donch, Peri’s Ombre Everything bag is made of 100% sustainable cotton canvas and hand-dyed in Los Angeles. It’s super hippie chic and machine washable, which will be helpful when her bottle of Kombucha accidently leaks inside her pretty purse.

Namaste Friends Forever ($$$)

Mindful Mosaic’s Core Chakra Gift Box was carefully curated by creator of Core Chakra, Dani Havasy. It contains everything you need to balance your chakras (even if you have no ideas what a chakra is) from essences to crystals and even yummy treats.

Your Fashionista Friend

You know that friend whose style you equally admire and are intimated by? She’s hard to buy a gift for because you know she might judge you. But that’s why you love her.

On Fleek ($)

Even if you can’t shell out for a coveted Christian Lacroix purse, you can buy an equally stylish notebook.

Influencer ($$)

Jac Vanek knows what is important. This zip pouch speaks the truth with enough room for tweezers and at least five of her favorite eyebrow products.

Best Dressed ($$$)

unnamed_12_1024x1024.jpg

Celebrity stylist Ali Levine’s collaboration with Sterling Forever has some of the chicest accessories this side of the red carpet. No matter what your friend’s signature style is, she will love the Roman Numeral Bracelet.

That Boring Couple Whose Party You’re Obligated To Attend

We all know that even the even the strongest booze won’t help get their party started. But you know what will? Spank The Yeti! ($25) Invented by a dirty-minded lady, think of this game as F*ck, Marry, Kill on crack, where you learn a whole lot abut the people you are playing with and laugh hysterically. You’ll have so much fun, you won’t even have to fake a reason for leaving early. If Spank the Yeti is a little too naughty for this couple’s taste or they have a kid, Schmovie is a more appropriate, but equally fun choice.

White Elephant Party

Picking up a Starbucks gift card along with your latte the morning of the party makes you look like a jerk. This year, buy a gift that will get stolen more than once like this Black Marble Cheese Board from CB2.

Becky With The Not-So-Good Hair

classic_trio_new_1024x1024.jpg

Do you have a friend with hair issues who is always asking to borrow a rubber band? Why doesn’t she have her own? It’s because she doesn’t have the Maria Shireen Hair Tie bracelet. Sophisticated, but sneaky, these bracelets look like trendy bangles, but are designed to hold hair ties. There are several styles starting at $35.

Your Friend Who Is Almost Annoyingly Obsessed With Her Cat

She will be equally obsessed with the LoveCats ring from Cat Bird ($32). Handmade of bronze in Brooklyn, she will be the trendiest lady outside the litter box.

Your Friend Who Loves Her Dog So Much, It Has Its Own Instagram Account

Get her a hand-printed tea towel from Best In Shore ($15). There are a variety of breeds available (only the cute ones) and a portion of sales is donated to animal rescues. Bonus karma points included.

Your Pregnant Friend

Everyone is buying her stuff for the baby, so why not be the cool person who buys her something she can use right now? Say hello to Hello Mellow’s Mommie To Be Gift Set ($68). It contains everything her changing body needs to relax including a scrub, body oil, body butter and the brilliantly named, I Can’t See My Feet Soak. Made of entirely of safe ingredients you can actually pronounce (even if you’ve had 6 champagne punches at her baby shower), Hello Mellow was created by Tracey Feldstein, a #GirlBoss, healer, and massage therapist.

Your Friend With A New Baby

People with new babies tend to get a lot of swag, but 45 books, 37 receiving blankets and 25 onesies later, what this person really wants is a night out. Get them a gift certificate to Helpr, which is a new app where they can book a pre-screened babysitter On Demand. It costs $21 per hour (3 hour minimum), so it’s reasonable and will be much appreciated.

Your Busy Friend Who Has No Time For Herself

Get her the Iluminage Deluxe Anti-Ageing Gift Set. It has an eye mask, gloves and socks made with patented copper technology that helps fighting aging while you sleep. Help her multi-task in ways she didn’t even know she could.

Kicking It With Mad Rabbit Kicking Tiger (M.R.K.T) Handbags

Last July, I was invited to the Mad Rabbit Kicking Tiger (M.R.K.T.) pop-up store opening party on Third Street in Los Angeles and my handbag collection hasn’t been the same since. If you haven’t heard of them, M.R.K.T. is a really innovative company that was started in 2010 by Tom Pen, who is a Harvard trained architect. His approach to design combines form and function in a really unique way. The bags are made from felt and other vegan and eco-friendly materials (so bonus karma points-yay!). They also feature lots of pockets and removable pouches so your bag doesn’t became an abyss of lost keys and lip glosses (so, annoying, right?). Another thing I like about M.R.K.T. is that all of their bags are very affordable. My favorite one is even under $100, which we all know happens pretty much never.

Knowing how enthusiastic I am about the brand, M.R.K.T. asked me if I wanted to collaborate and do a photoshoot with them. How could I say no to that? They sent out photographer Chin-Chin Hao, who you might know from her work with Chanel (yes, that Chanel) and Violet Grey. We hit the glamorous streets of West Hollywood and Hancock Park. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the shoot.

Don't mess with my style!

Both M.R.K.T. and I are very serious about removable straps.

If I had to choose a favorite M.R.K.T. bag, it would be the Parker Tote because it's so unique looking. I literally can't wear it without being stopped in the street by people telling me how stylish my bag is. It's seriously out of control!

F- It Fridays: Your Weekly Dose of Retail Therapy (Throw Blankets Edition)

Most of us have had a really challenging week in one way or another. It’s often during these times when we want to throw in the towel, throw our electronics out of a window (but please don’t) or just throw ourselves on the couch and cry. So, for this F-It Friday post, we're going to look at some stylish throw blankets because retail therapy helps. (Oh, and if retail therapy doesn't quite do the trick, here are some other things to try.)

Lulu likes to steal my throw.

Lulu likes to steal my throw.

This Burberry throw is beyond luxurious, but in a totally subtle way. And what could be softer than cashmere?

MISSONI SIMONE THROW

Missoni’s Simone throw is one of the more reasonably priced throws made by the legendary Italian label. Fun, but sophisticated, it adds color and texture to any couch or chair.

Fabulous, yet practical, this faux fur throw from Anthropologie is available in grey, white and navy.

NORDSTROM AT HOME GRAND CABLE THROW

No matter what style your home is, from traditional to modern, you can’t go wrong with a cable knit throw like this one from Nordstrom

THE WELL-APPOINTED HOUSE HERRINGBONE PLUSH FRINGED THROW

I love this herringbone throw from The Well-Appointed House. Available in sixteen different colors, it can be monogrammed or customized with a message. It also makes a great holiday or housewarming gift.
