Dressing Like The Stars: Met Gala 2017 Edition

The annual Met Gala in New York is a fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute aka the fashion exhibits. It’s one of the most important fashion events, if not the most important fashion event on the East Coast. This year, the theme for the event was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, which honored the designer and founder of the label.

Several of attendees this year really honored the theme, forgoing avant garde outfits and opting for more classic pieces instead. Here are some of my favorite looks from the night along with similar dresses that you don’t have to be a celeb to pull off or pay for.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow looked pretty in a pink Calvin Klein dress. Copy the cut, but in a more universally flattering color in Halston Heritage

Zoey Deutch

Zoey Deutch wore an absolutely stunning Tory Burch dress. White House Black Market has an interesting version of it, that's a little more boho inspired and causal.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner definitely outshined her sisters in a La Perla dress made entirely of crystals. Missguided’s Glitter Fishnet Overlay Slip takes two of the most important elements of Kendall’s dress, the shimmer and texture, making it perfect for less formal and more fun occasions.

Gisele

Gisele shined in a silver beaded cutout dress by Stella McCartney. Sharing a similar va va voom vibe, this cutout sequined stretch jersey gown by Halston Heritage won’t score you Tom Brady, but make you will feel like a supermodel.

Candice Swanepoel

Candice Swanepoel’s TopShop dress was my favorite look of the event. Obviously, I checked TopShop to see if the dress was available and it’s safe to say, the gown was custom. Seriously, TopShop, can you please release this dress to us non-model shoppers?  Luckily, Amanda Uprichard saves the day with her black sweetheart neckline dress, which shares a similar classic elegance. Who doesn't need another little black dress in their wardrobe?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

_100761423-2.jpg

I will try not to comment or judge adult twins who still dress alike. I will try really hard. Okay, I just failed, but no one does boho quite like the Olsen twins do. In lace dresses that were accessorized in a way that can only be described as eclectic, they still rocked the white carpet, even if it does seem a little bit absurd (I'm being kind here). Say "I do" with TopShop’s Bride Bardot lace off the shoulder gown, which shares the Olsen's chill boho vibe with layers and bell sleeves.

Elizabeth Banks

It was hard not to check out Elizabeth Banks in her Michael Kors checkerboard dress. While this is not a regular Elizabeth Banks look, I thought it was a fun and interesting choice.  Donna Rae New York’s halter dress has a similar print but no one will try to hail you 50 years ago.

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian looked beautiful, but this Vivienne Westwood gown was the last thing everyone was expecting her to wear. It’s a mature new look. DKNY makes a similar white off the shoulder dress. However, just because Kim can get away without accessorizing doesn’t mean you can. This dress is just begging for a statement necklace or bold earrings.

Dressing Like The Stars: Oscars 2017 Edition

All I can say about the Oscars last night is “wow.” It was night of mistakes (okay, just one really big one), but not when it came to fashion. I didn't see one jaw-dropping-but-in-a-bad-way dress on the red carpet at all. As I was typing this, I almost accidentally wrote "runway" instead of "red carpet." Perhaps that was a Freudian slip or fashion slip, but runway is a good way to describe the general vibe of the evening. The dresses were big, bold and much like the movies, each one told a story in its own unique way. Here are some favorites from the night along with similar dresses that will inspire you to win best dressed at your next big event.

Naomie Harris

Naomie Harris was simply stunning in Calvin Klein. Look just as wild in white with this shorter Black Halo cocktail dress. It has the same idea sans sequins. But, if you'd rather wear the "Best Supporting Dress" of the evening, this high-low from Halston Heritage provides a little more support than something strapless.

Kirsten Dunst

I totally fell in love with Kirsten Dunst's Dior faille dress. Halton Heritage's halter has a similar shape and captures the same classic look, while this floral dress by Ienna For Mac Duggal puts a trendy spin on it.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron was daring in a Dior gold lame gown. Steal her look almost entirely in Nicole Miller or choose a more subtle style from A.L.C.

Ginnifer Goodwin

Ginnifer Goodwin was ravishing in a red dress by Zuhair Murad. Make your own statement in this red lace dress from Finity or try a crochet layered style from Self-Portrait.

Jillian Reeves

I'm completely obsessed with Jillian Reeves' jewel toned Matthew Christopher dress, styled by my girl, Ali Levine. Ieena For Mac Duggal's gown takes the trophy for being equally grand, but way less expensive. This Halston Heritage dress is in the same color palette, but more appropriate for a less formal event.

Dressing Like The Stars: Grammys 2017 Edition

The Grammys are generally one of the most interesting nights for awards show fashion because we always expect artists to take risks and shock us. It’s fair to say that every risk with the exception of one really paid off last night. Overall, the red carpet felt more like a runway. With so much high fashion, the vibe was more like the Oscars than the Grammys. Think old Hollywood and less old time rock and roll. Here are some of my favorite looks from the event and similar styles more appropriate for those who give concerts in the smallest of venues, like their showers.

Adele

Adele was a green goddess in Givenchy. You'll want to say hello to these green dresses from 3.1 Phillip Lim and Ali & Jay

Jennifer Lopez

Purple has been the stand out color this awards season and Jennifer Lopez's Ralph and Russo dress was my personal favorite look of the night. Nasty Gal and Boo Hoo have stylistically similar dresses, both of which are affordable, no matter what block you're from.

Charli XCX

Charli XCX rocked the red carpet in Vivienne Westwood. Rock your own event in these ravishing dresses by Faviana and Nicole Miller.

Keltie Knight

Keltie Knight has never looked more stunning. Her Burberry dress shines bright. Consider her style your guide in this dress by Missguided or Amanda Uprichard

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum was anything but plain in Phillip Plein. Shine bright like a super model in a short silver dress from Carla G. or ASOS (plus size).

Soundz

Styled by Ali Levine, Soundz aka the guy who produces Justin Bieber's music, took over the red carpet in a custom burgundy suit from Klein, Epstein and Parker (not to be confused with a law firm of the same name). If you don't have Bieber money (or Bieber girls, or that cool haircut), cover Soundz' style with a tuxedo jacket and pants from ASOS.

Tinashe

Tinashe had lots of panache in Alexander Wang. Cut out and copy her look with Halston Heritage's Hi Lo Crepe Dress .

Margaret Cho

The Fashion Police's Margaret Cho looked anything but lame in a lamé pantsuit. Go for the gold in this blazer from Sinéquanone.

Dressing Like The Stars: The People's Choice Awards 2017 Edition

When it comes to the People’s Choice Awards, it doesn’t really matter who wins or loses, as long as they look good on the red carpet. Honestly, I didn’t watch the show and couldn't even be bothered to find out who the winners were. As far as I'm concerned, the red carpet is the main event.  After all, awards season isn't simply a time to watch a bunch of people you don't know give speeches you don't want to listen to. It's about finding new inspiration for those nights when you need to look extra fabulous (or at the very least, when you must get out of sweatpants). Luckily, you don't need a stylist or an unlimited bank account to dress like the stars. Here are my favorite looks from the event last night alongside some similar, more affordable styles that will make you look so good, you might just get chased by the paparazzi (your friend with one of those cameras not designed to make phone calls).

Blake Lively

Blake Lively topped all of the best dressed lists in Elie Saab. Top everyone at your next event in these fringe-tastic dresses by Aidan Mattox and French Connection.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra made everyone blush in Sally LaPointe, but you can make everyone swoon in Misa and Forever 21.

Ruby Rose

Blaze the red carpet (or the carpet at your office) like Ruby Rose in her Veronica Beard suit with these lookalikes from Vince Camuto and Express.

Ashley Greene

Ashley Greene went purple in Jeffrey Dodd. These dresses from Adrianna Papell and Diane Von Furstenberg share the same stylish, but reserved vibe at a fraction of the price.

Fifth Harmony

This might be the only time Fifth Harmony can be described as neutral. Look equally harmonious in these fabulous frocks by Reverse, Paper Crown and Amsale.

Keltie Knight

Own the night like Keltie in your own striking green dress from Women's Social or  Boohoo.

Lilly Singh

Look anything but lame in lamé in Topshop and Nicole Miller
