It’s World Environment Day—So Let’s Talk Eco-Friendly Beauty

Is Earth Day having a sequel? Yes! It’s World Environment Day! This is a great time to talk about eco-friendly beauty

But Let’s STFU For A Second

You might not realize and it’s very important to know that terms such as “eco-friendly,” “green” or “natural,” are meaningless. The FDA has no standard for these kinds of labels.  You can bottle poison and legally call it natural. WTF?

So How Do You Find Products That Are Less Bad For Mamma Earth?

While this is by NO means a complete list—if you are looking for products that are better for you and the environment, here are some things to keep in mind.

These are preservatives that have been banned in Europe. Studies show they can increase breast cancer. So, if you have breast cancer in your family, seriously avoid Parabens.

This chemical is often found in sunscreens and is a known hormone disruptor. It was recently banned in the state of Hawaii.

You know those little bead things you find in some scrubs? Those are often made of Polyethylene. These little suckers don’t just irritate your skin—they aren’t filtered out the sewage system. So, they end up in the ocean and where cute animals and fish eat them as snacks. THESE ARE TERRIBLE SNACKS!

Sustainable Ingredients/Sustainably Sourced

This means the ingredients and often packaging are made from renewable resources. So a forest doesn’t have to die for you to look pretty.

For a product to be organic, it means at least 95% of the ingredients must be certified as organic. Products that are “made with organic ingredients” have less than 95% organic ingredients in the formulation.

Cruelty-Free products are not tested on animals. You might see Leaping Bunny certification on cruelty-free products. This means the brand meets all of that organization’s standards.

Vegan products contain no animal derived ingredients.

If you want to obsess or do a deep dive, check out this list of The Dirty Dozen chemicals to avoid.

…But Be Easy On Yourself

Look, it’s not 100% practical to find products are completely devoid of anything that could possibly harm you or the environment. So, try to be realistic. If you find something that’s paraben-free, but not organic—don’t beat yourself up. You still get karma points.

Here are some of my favorite eco-friendly beauty products.

AveSeena Ageless Perfection Cream

AveSeena moisturizer is a new love of mine. It’s a cream, which initially made me nervous because normally CREAMS ARE SOOOOO HEAVY. But this feels so light, I even use it under my eyes. It also does everything from helping with wrinkles, dehydration (obvs because it’s a moisturizer) and loss of radiance and firmness. I look and feel like I’m 12 after applying it!

AveSeena products are 100% naturally derived, Leaping Bunny certified, and non-toxic.

Love Beauty and Planet Peace & Glow Sugar and Rose Body Scrub

rose scrub.jpeg

Who doesn’t love a nice body scrub, especially in the summer? For $7, this one gets the job done, smells good and doesn’t have that salty burn that many scrubs tend to have. One of my favorite drugstore lines—All Love, Beauty and Planet products are sustainably sourced, vegan and cruelty-free. Did I mention they all smell like heaven?

Coola Dawn Patrol Primer

dawn patrol.jpg

I am LIVING for this product right now. Dawn Patrol is an SPF 30 primer that feels so light on your skin, you almost won’t believe this is a sunscreen. But I’m 1000% sure they are NOT lying. At the moment, I want to declare this my favorite multitasker of all time. I even use it without makeup to avoid that heavy feeling of sunscreen on my face. Coola products are vegan, oxybenzone-free, octinoxate-free, paraben free and reef safe/friendly.

If your skin is a little dryer or you aren’t looking for a primer, I’m all about Coola Sport Face SPF 50 White Tea Organic Sunscreen Lotion. It’s available in the summer Fab Fit Fun Box. Use my code: AMANDAL for $10 off. Just a heads up—this product costs $32 and the box is $40 with the code. There are sooooo many awesome goodies in the box including a makeup palette from Tarte. Check out my Instagram for a full reveal of every product.

Bloom Mineral Beauty Purifying Almond Scrub

bloom .jpg

Because I use not-so-eco-friendly Retin A on my skin regularly, my face has the tendency to peel and flake. This scrub gently removes the flakes without burning or irritation. It has a light, but creamy texture. Boom Mineral Products are paraben-free, GMO-Free, petroleum, and cruelty-free.

Another favorite multitasker—I use often use this oil at night because it really moisturizes and soothes. The Vitamin C makes an additional serum unnecessary, which is great for your wallet and the planet. Because this oil is very concentrated, one bottle lasts pretty close to forever. It’s great for all skin types including oily and has no synthetic fragrances, parabens, or phthalates.

GA-DE Fragrances

So, TBH, I haven't tried this line myself yet because I just learned about it, but I'm obsessed already. GA-DE has a full line of makeup, skincare, bodycare and perfume. Finding less toxic perfumes can be such a challenge, so I'm dying to try them. GA-DE uses recyclable and biodegradable packaging and ingredients that are better for people and environment. I'm obsessed with their fragrances which include Icon Pearl, Icon Musk, and Icon Vanilla Black. Also, these bottles are soooooo pretty, I want all of them.

Spring Makeup 2018: Everything I'm Wearing

So last week, I shared the vanity area I created in my office. Having a Vanity Girl Hollywood mirror is a game changer. It’s the mirror equivalent of driving in the express lane to Flawlessville because bad makeup is the worst.

You know when you put on makeup in a place with bad lighting, you leave the house and people who love you approach you in an uncomfortable way and ask, “Can I be honest?”

Then they tell your makeup looks like dog doo doo and that you’re about as blended as yesterday’s stale smoothie? If you have a Vanity Girl Hollywood mirror, THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. EVER!

So what am I applying to my flawless (or TBH, close enough) face? Here are all of my spring 2018 makeup go-tos.

(1) Miss A Paw Paw Charity: All About Eyes Brush Set + Brush Holder

I love this brush set because it comes with a pretty holder. The brushes are super soft, Instaperfect and it's under $11 for the entire thing. A portion of each purchase goes to help animals, so yay for extra karma points.

(2) Style Edit Blonde Perfection Root Touch Up

Style Edit is a hot mess prevention tool that lets you temporarily cover up your roots. But, it's not just for blondes—there are shades available for all hair colors.

(3) Coola Dawn Patrol Primer

I live and die for Retin A, but it makes your skin super sensitive to the sun, so I need to wear sunscreen every day. This primer and sunscreen combo feels so light, it’s like not wearing anything at all. I even use it without makeup.

(4) Urban Decay B6 Vitamin-Infused Complexion Prep Priming Spray

I use this primer when I'm running late and don’t have that extra minute. The formula is ideal for oily and combination skin.

(5) Urban Decay Defense Complexion Primer

I might be addicted to primer. Please send help! But seriously, how is your foundation going to stay on without a good foundation?

(6) Juice Beauty Phyto-Pigments Flawless Serum Foundation

I love this foundation because it’s vegan and the coverage is very buildable. I wear it to the supermarket and for photoshoots. It's the only one I need.

(7) Supergoop! Invincible Setting Powder

With an SPF of 45, it’s a great way to re-apply sunscreen, and I love that the powder is built into the brush.

(8) Sweat Cosmetics Mineral Illuminator

Created by Olympic athletes, I’m obsessed with Sweat because I can wear it when I work out or go hiking. It's the most natural looking highlighter I've tried and very easy to apply with the built-in brush.

(9) Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50

One of my fave new multi-taskers, Supergoop! is perfect for those long days when I don't have time for a makeup touch-up.

(10) Sweat Cosmetics Mineral Foundation SPF 30 Powder Jar

This stays put through spin class! Do I really need to say anything else?

(11) MMXV Infinitude Cream

This light moisturizer is great under makeup, absorbs quickly and feels like nothing on the skin. It also has a fresh scent. Bonus!

(12) Nars Orgasm

I just can’t quit this classic blush. I’ve been wearing it since high school and I have yet to stray. It also blends really well with a highlighter.

(13) Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine Lip Glosses

These lip glosses have just the right amount of color and shine with a surprising amount of staying power. They also plump your lips in a way that feels fresh without burning. Why do so many lip plumpers burn? Ugh! All of that with a smooth, almost buttery texture. If you’re over liquid mattes or want something a little lighter, Urban Decay Hi-Fi Shine lip glosses are available every color you could ever want.

(14) Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette

Hands down, this is the best way to create a natural look. Every single color is usable, which is rare for any makeup palette.

(15) Urban Decay Backtalk Palette

I’m living for this eye/highlighter palette lately. It’s great for a bold look that works well on Instagram and IRL. If you like pinks and mauves, but are afraid to try them, Backtalk can help you create truly wearable looks. Just a head’s up—it’s limited edition, so buy one now! Maybe buy more than one. Not kidding.

(16) Beth Bender Beauty Highlighters

Did you hear Beth on my podcast? She has the best highlighters and I have them in LOTS of colors. I even use them on my eyes in a pinch.

(17) Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer

This concealer is a little spendy but it lasts forever. I’ve had mine for over two years with no end in sight. It’s the bottomless mimosas of makeup.

(18) Miss A Brush Egg

I use this tool to clean my brushes off in between washing them.

(19) Urban Decay Eyeshadow

Clearly, I'm Urban Decay for life!

(20) Beth Bender Eyeliner Gel

These liner gels were made for creating the perfect cat eye and they are so easy to use. If you have trouble creating a cat eye, check out Beth's stencils.

(21) Stoweaway Defined Volume Mascara

Perfect for a touch up on the go or for travel.

(22) Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

These eyeliners apply like butter, wash off like nothing, but stay on even through an episode of This is Us.  They are magic.

(23) Juice Beauty Phyto Pigment Ultra-Natural Mascara

I use this for an everyday natural look.

(24) Urban Decay Naked Petite Heat

This has all the right colors to create a perfect smoky eye.

How To Wake Up With Hair Like A Mermaid

Do you want to wake up with perfect beach waves like a mermaid? No, this isn’t an infomercial, but I am going to share something magic with you. Please believe me when I say I basically woke up like this. Getting dreamy beach waves in your sleep is easy and will even save you time in the morning, so it's basically the best beauty multitasking ever.

Here’s everything you need (and you might not even need all of this)

Verb Sea Salt Spray

Alterna Bamboo Beach Ocean Waves Spray

Alterna Bamboo Waves Cream

A cotton headband

Two hair ties

A silk pillowcase (optional but trust me on this)

1. Before you go to bed, brush out your hair. I like using a WET Brush on dry hair to detangle, but whatever brush you have will do.

2. Spray out your hair with either product. The Alterna is a less drying than the Verb because it doesn’t have salt, but you have to see what works best for your hair.

3. Create two pigtail braids. The tighter the braid, the more defined the wave. I also recommend starting the braid around ear level because it makes your waves more natural looking.

Just me in my PJs

Just me in my PJs

4. Put on a cotton headband to keep the braids in place. You don't have to do this, but I highly recommend it because it really keeps the hair in place.

5. Pass out on your silk pillowcase. If you were wondering…Silk pillowcases are less damaging to the hair and prevent frizz. Also, they feel super nice and fancy.

6. When you wake up, take your braids out and look like a mermaid. If you move around a lot in your sleep and your hair is looking a little Ursula-esque, don’t fret. Lightly (and I mean lightly) flatiron the top of your hair. Then slightly dampen your hands and run the Alterna cream through the waves of your hair.

7. Look like a mermaid and impress everyone.

If you want mermaid hair but have time management issues or there's other stuff going on when you sleep, dampen your hair, spray on product and leave it in braids for as long as possible. You can also use any hair dryer to speed up the process. Just make sure to leave your braids in for a few minutes after applying heat, so the hair sets.

Mermaid at the Farmers Market.

Mermaid at the Farmers Market.

Just a heads up (no pun intended, kinda), this tutorial works best on long hair. But as long as your hair is shoulder length (must stop punning), you should be fine. It also might take a night or two to get the hang of it and see where you should start your braids and how tight they should be, but once you get the hang of it—this will change your life, or at least your hair, so close enough.

18 Best Beauty Tips, Tricks and Hacks for 2018

New year! New you! Old cliché! I actually started writing this post in 2017 and probably should have posted it 26 days ago, so you'll have to forgive me. But these tips, tricks and beauty hacks will make up for my lack of organization. These are the best of my best tips and ones I really apply in my own life. All the time. From skincare to makeup to hair care, here are the game changers.

Silk Pillowcases Aren’t A Luxury—They’re a Necessity

I don't care what your thread count is, cotton causes friction and absorbs moisture. Your skin and hair need all the moisture they can get. Silk pillowcases really help your skin stay soft and prevent hair breakage and frizz. You will notice the difference when you wake up in the morning.

Remove All Of Your Makeup By Double Cleansing

Check your hopefully silk pillowcases. If they are stained, you need to wash your makeup off better. Start with an oil cleanser. It will suck all everything from your face like a vacuum. Then continue with your regular cleansing routine.

You Don’t Need Super Pricey Facewash

Don’t hate me but I obsessed over my cleanser for years and spent way too much money on it. It’s important, but not as important as you think.

Wash Your Face With A Washcloth

Unless you are washing your face in the shower, don’t splash (and get water all over your bathroom). Instead, use a hot washcloth. That way your skin will be fully cleansed and it feels like mini facial. I personally use the ones from Amazon Basics. They’re soft and surprisingly high quality.

Your Products Don’t Work Because You Need To Exfoliate

Is that new product you bought not working? That’s because you aren’t exfoliating. Do it two or three days a week.

Serums Are Life

Serums will actually change your skin. No matter what your skincare type is, you need one.

Shut Up, I don’t Care What Your Skin Type Is, You Need To Moisturize

A of people are afraid to moisturize if they have combination or oily skin, but you need to reevaluate that belief. Sometimes your skin is oily because it is trying to balance itself out. When you apply moisturizer, your skin tends to CTFD.

Castor Oil Makes Your Lashes & Brows Bomb

Are you thinking about microblading or getting a prescription for Latisse? Try this natural alternative first. Before you go to bed, apply black castor oil (BLACK, not the regular kind) to your lash line and brows with a Q-tip.

Light Is Life

If you can’t see your face properly, how are you supposed to apply your makeup? I have a Vanity Girl Hollywood Mirror and it’s a total game changer. There are several available in different sizes. They also have travel and tabletop mirrors in their pop-up store. If don’t believe me, ask Kim Kardashian. She has one. Also, the company’s chief boss babe, Maxine Tatlonghari was on my podcast.

Prime Prime Prime Your Face

You know those women who look perfect all of the time or at the very least still have a fresh face at 6:00pm? Don't hate them. Just use a primer. Apply after your moisturizer but before your foundation.

Prime Your Lashes

I love lash primer. It helps keep your lashes looking pretty and amps up your mascara game. It’s worth the extra 30 seconds this step adds to your routine.

Liquid Mattes Last Longer Than Most Relationships

Who has time to re-apply their lips? NOT ME. Liquid matte lipsticks tend to stay on forever. These days, I’m digging SPELA’s Spin, but they have lots of cute colors.

Set Set Set

Setting spray is just as important as primer. And it takes like 4 seconds to apply. You can even use it instead of powder.

Dry Shampoo Does Everything

Dry shampoo is like a personal assistant for your hair. It's great to apply to your roots after working out, during a hang over or if you just don’t have time for a full on wash. You can also use it to texturize your hair, cover up bad roots, or instead of hairspray.

Don’t Dry Your Hair With A Normal Towel

Don’t turban up your wet hair with the same towel you use to dry your body. Instead, use a towel designed for drying your hair specifically. The fabric is less harsh, the water will be absorbed better, leading to less drying time and less destroyed hair.

Use A Heat Protectant

Heat obviously damages your hair, but you probably aren’t going to stop using hot tools, so just protect your hair in the first place.

Red Eyeshadow Tutorial: A Pretty & Easy Holiday Look

Red eyeshadow is a great holiday party look for Christmas, New Years Eve’s or just happy hour (if you’ve had a bad day, happy hour is considered a party). It’s a perfect trendy look for people who don’t normally do the trendy look thing because they are afraid of looking like an utter jackass. But red is super easy to apply, sexy and not as over the top as it sounds. Just don’t do it if you are wearing green. There’s only so much holiday spirit that is appropriate at one time.

The look I did was so pretty that even my husband noticed. I was actually so shocked when he said something that I tripped and nearly landed on my face. So I highly recommend you forewarn the people around you that there will be a whole lot of glowing going on.

Here are the steps I took to create this look.

Apply Laura Geller Spackle Tinted Under Makeup Primer in Champagne to your entire face. I know there are 9000 primers out there to choose from, but because Spackle is so moisturizing, it’s the best choice for winter skin.

Cover Up

Dot concealer under your eyes. My personal favorite is Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer Concealer and Foundation. Warning: This product is very concentrated—so first apply to your hand and then blend out.

Also, let’s keep a secret between us. This product is the bottomless mimosa brunch of concealer. My little jar has lasted 1.5 years with no end in sight.

Apply Foundation

Blend out your foundation with a silicone blender to create a matte look. Because your eyes are bold and shiny, you don’t want to be too shimmery or dewy with the rest of your face. I like the MakeupDrop Silicone Makeup Applicator. If you’ve never used a silicone applicator before, the first few times you try it will feel like an alien is licking your face, but once you get used to working this way, it’s borderline life changing. I put a few drops of Nars All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation on the applicator itself and take it from there.

Hone The Brow Bone

Apply an off-white matte shadow to your entire lid—brow bone to lash line. I’m wearing Blanc Type By MAC.

Layer Your Lid

Apply a light taupe shadow to your lid. I’m using the Morphe 350 Nature Glow Eyeshadow Palette. The shade I used us the second shadow down on the left side of the palette.

Color The Crease

Then apply a shimmery red shadow to your crease and upper part of your lid. I’m using the second to last shadow in the Morphe palette.

Blend using a Beauty Blender or sponge.

Line The Lashes

Use a brown liquid liner on the top lash line. I like Shiseido Automatic Fine Eyeliner in Brown or Wet N Wild Proline Felt Tip Eyeliner in Dark Brown. (I know, very high and low end).

Apply a shimmery white liner to the bottom of your waterline. I used NYX Slim Eye Pencil in White Pearl here.

Shimmer And Shine

Apply a more shimmery red shadow over your lower lash line and blend out. You can do the entire length of your eye for a more dramatic effect. The color I chose here is from the Ardell Shimmer Pro Eyeshadow Palette.

Make Sure Your Brows Are Banging

Fill in your brows with a pencil or gel. I’m wearing Wunderbrow Brow Gel in Brunette (yeah, I’m a blonde but brow trends).

Love Your Lashes

Curl Your Eyelashes.

Apply lash primer. I use Radiant Complex.

Then apply mascara. I’m wearing L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara in Carbon Black. The brush is great because it helps you coat even those tiny, mini, sort of invisible lashes.

Check Your Cheeks

Apply blush to the apples of your cheeks. I’m all about Nars Orgasm (for life).

Apply highlighter on top of the blush. I like Sweat Cosmetics Mineral Illuminator because the powder is built right into the brush, so it dispenses subtly and evenly.

Set It And Forget It

Finish off your look with setting spray. I used UncompliKated SPF 50 Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray by Kate Somerville to get that slightly airbrushed/IRL Pretty Filter look.

Love Your Lips

I was terrified to try purple and now I’m obsessed with Laura Geller New York Color Luster Lip Gloss The Diamonds Top Coat Duo. This is the most beautiful purple I’ve ever seen. It has a rich, moisturizing feel and lasts longer than most glosses.

Extensions Make You Win The Hair Game

Hppy Selife.jpeg

So, if you’ve been reading my blog (you know the thing you are reading right now), you are probably aware, I’ve been having hair issues. I tried EVERYTHING from taking biotin pills like candy to walking around with a greasy head for days from castor oil. Seriously, if I didn’t work from home, I would have been escorted out of an office building because I looked like a hobo.

And while my hair improved—I still wasn’t happy. Let’s get real here for a second. I have a blog and cover freaking beauty. I should have remotely decent to extremely awesome hair and I didn’t. But now I do.

To be honest with you, ever since that woman told me how bad my hair was at BeautyCon back in August (I actually re-tell the story on the podcast Ali and I did with Abby Stern), I’ve been playing out the situation in my head over and over again. I’ve felt totally self-conscious for months. Feeling this way just isn’t productive for me. So, I wanted to find a solution to my problem and take the fastest route to Goodhairville. Enter Kristina Gibson who is an extension specialist and hair colorist in Beverly Hills. She is also a hair goddess!

When I sat down for my consultation, it wasn’t just her telling me what was wrong with my hair (I KNOW WHAT’S WRONG—EVERYTHING!), but she listened and was all about solutions. Honestly, I was worried extensions might be bad for my hair, but she explained how I was wrong. “A benefit of extensions is that, at least for me, when I have them, I don’t touch my hair that much with heat, only the extension hair. So, your hair can become healthier if you keep doing masks, etc.” YES!

Kristina also told me extensions allow you to apply less heat to your own hair, which means less damage and hopefully more growth, so perhaps one day extensions won’t be necessary.

Extensions are really for everyone who is dissatisfied with their hair in some way. Let’s say you have generally good hair, but you get a bad haircut and are trying to grow it out. If you are in that awkward, potentially mullet-ish stage, you can wear extensions for a few months until you don’t hate your hair again.

One of the first things we discussed was what kind of extensions I should have. Here’s a quick breakdown of the different kinds of hair extensions.

Tape-in extensions are taped into the hair without any heat applied. Because they are large pieces that lie flat, they don’t pull on the hair and irritate the scalp. For me, this kind made the most sense. Over the years, I’ve had every kind of extension and I found tape-ins look the best on me and last the longest. They are also more affordable than other kinds. Furthermore, if you take really good care of them (tips are below), you can re-use them, even up to a year.

Kristina is an i-Tip hair extension expert, although she can install any kind of hair extension (obviously). i-Tips are applied strand by strand and attached with a small bead, which is then clamped onto your natural hair. Because they are applied without heat, glue or chemicals, these extensions don’t damage your hair. Another benefit of i-Tips is that they have a lot more movement to them than other kinds of extensions do. You are set for 3-6 months and the hair can be re-used. i-Tip extensions are sometimes called microlink or cold fusion.

The stylist braids your hair and sews in extensions with a needle and thread. This kind of extension lasts approximately 6-8 weeks. Weaves are very easy to style and put in a ponytail, which is especially helpful if you workout a lot.

Clip-in extensions are exactly what they sound like. You clip them in like any other hair accessory. If you’ve never had extensions before and aren’t sure if you want them, consider experimenting with clip-ins first. They are great if you like to switch things up or you just don’t want to commit right now. Obviously, this just applies to hair and hopefully not other things in your life.

Sometimes clip-ins are made with synthetic hair, which is fine for clips-ins only, but do NOT install any kind of regular extension with synthetic hair because they will melt from any kind of hot tool.

Kristina also shared some of her best extension tips with me.

Use A WET Brush, Even On Dry Hair

Extensions are great, but they get tangled AF. Tangled extensions are a nightmare and don’t last as long as they potentially can. Kristina told me to use a WET Brush on both wet and dry hair because it has flexible bristles that won’t get caught on the tape.

When I’m combing conditioner or a mask into my hair, I use the WET Original Brush. I like the small, travel-sized one because it gives me more control. But when I’m blow-drying my hair or brushing it when it is dry, I use the WET EPIC Professional Quick Dry. This brush detangles really well without pulling on my extensions.

Avoid Using Products With Oil

This one is hard for me because I’m OBSESSED anything oil. But using oils make your extensions slip because it eats away at the glue. So go through your beauty stash and look for serums, oil, shampoo, conditioner or anything that is labeled “oil-based” and toss, give away or hide it from yourself. If you are going to use an oil-based product, be careful and do not get it anywhere near the installation of your extensions.

Shampoo Carefully

When you shampoo your hair, put some extra shampoo on your fingertips and carefully get in between each row of hair because those areas can get particularly dirty.

Don’t Go To Bed With Wet Hair

According to Kristina, this is the WORST thing you can do for your hair.

Prepare Your Hair For Zzz Time

Use a silk pillowcase and sleep with your hair in a braid, bun or ponytail. I sleep with my hair in a side braid and wake up with sexy mermaid beach waves that take just minutes to style.

Winning Winter Beauty—Bodycare Edition

FullSizeRender 16.jpg

It’s the winter. Well, technically it's fall because winter officially starts on December 21st, but I feel like we are there already. Even in Los Angeles. The second the temperature drops all moisture just leaves my body and goes on vacation, so really that’s close enough. Part of the problem is that I like to take extra hot showers, which can just be murder on your skin, but let’s be honest—I probably won't stop that, so I’ve found a body care routine that restores the moisture that gets stripped away. In the past two months, I’ve mixed up my body care routine from the summer, tried some new products and stayed loyal to a few favorites. Here are my current body care essentials. While you can use these products year round (and probably should), it’s especially important to make time to take care of your entire body during the upcoming colder months.

Tree Hut Coconut Lime Shea Sugar Scrub

Exfoliation is life! If your skin is dry and you just keep applying body lotion, it’s not going to do its job well because you have to get rid of the dead skin cells. I like to exfoliate my body at least once or twice a week during the winter. I know some people have crazy intense body exfoliation routines and dry brush (don’t ask me what that is because I really have no idea other than the fact that such things exist), but honestly for me, using a scrub is easy, fast, inexpensive and gets the job done.

Tree Hut Coconut Lime Shea Sugar Scrub  smells like a tropical island in a jar and feels amazing on your skin. There is also a matching lotion you can use after you shower, but most of the time the oil in the product itself should be enough.

Trader Joe’s Lavender Body Scrub

tj lav.jpeg

This is my to-go scrub on those days when I workout after work and shower before bed. The lavender oil in this product helps me to fall asleep. I also love this scrub because I’m always at Trader Joe’s so it’s NBD to pick up.

SkinCeuticals Body Tightening Concentrate

883140023159-body-tightening (1).png

SkinCeuticals is one of my favorite brands. Everything they make is good. Not kidding. The Body Tightening Concentrate isn’t for your whole body, but rather the areas you are trying to reduce or aren’t as tight as you would like them to be. While it helps you look firmer, this does not mean you can go eat a cupcake and subsequently use a ton of product, but if you are eating healthy and working out, this is a great supplement. It also feels really good and refreshing on your skin. I personally apply it to trouble spots—my abs and inner thighs. I even think a thigh gap might be in my future.

Bliss Fatgirlslim Arm Candy

Bliss Fatgirlslim Arm Candy contains caffeine, lactic acid and moisture beads, to make your arms look sleeker and more toned. While obviously it isn’t a substitute for exercise and not eating like an animal, if you are doing those things and your arms need some extra help, Bliss is your girl!

Applying this cream is a little different than most body lotions. You use the applicator that is attached to the bottle and massage it in for 20-30 seconds. It feels really nice after a post-workout shower.

Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer With Refreshing Coconut Oil

If you didn’t know, your skin absorbs moisture better when wet and Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer With Refreshing Coconut Oil is formulated for this use specially. I keep the bottle in my shower instead of the medicine cabinet. Honestly, sometimes I slack off and use it on dry skin. I just wet my hands a little first. This lotion makes my legs silky smooth and has a light scent which really mixes well with any other product or fragrance I’m using.

Kopari Coconut Sheer Oil

I love Kopari Coconut Sheer Oil. It’s one of my favorite multitasking products because it is formulated for the hair, body and face. I use it on areas that need a little extra moisture like my hands and elbows and then I wipe the excess on the ends of my hair. If the thought of coconut oil turns you off because you also cook with it, this is product is nothing like taking out one of those giant jars. It’s caller Sheer oil for a reason. It’s also sulfate, paraben and phthalate free as well as hypoallergenic, gluten-free, cruelty-free, silicone-free, and non-GMO. So if your skin is super sensitive, dry and irritated, this might just change your life.

Hating My Hair Less

hair hate.jpg

A few weeks ago I talked about my hair crisis. Read the post, but if you are short on time, here’s a recap. A total stranger told me I had bad hair at a beauty convention of all places. I felt bad about myself. But then I realized I wasn’t trying hard enough to have good hair, so I’m going balls to the wall to do it now.

So, I know what you are thinking…really how hard is it to just use some extra conditioner? Girl, this is way more than just some extra conditioner. I surpassed needing extra conditioner around the time I exited my mother’s womb. Getting good hair is practically a lifestyle choice at this point. I’m putting in effort much in the same way someone studies for the Bar Exam or opens up an Etsy Shop. That being said, if you make clip in or halo extensions and want to collab, please get in touch ( I think a temporary fix might just be in order for my next post.

So, the whole “lifestyle change” about this involves hours of my life I’ll never get back and days of leaving in two different kinds of hair oil. This is a big commitment. If I didn’t work at home, I would have been fired from my job already because sometimes it looks like I haven’t washed my hair for a year. If it weren’t for topknots being trendy, I’d be screwed.

I’ve been using Black Castor Oil several days a week on my scalp and roots as well as my brows and lashes because why not. Before I started this hair journey (ugh), I learned castor oil is a natural fix to grow your hair because it balances out your scalp’s pH and is an antifungal as well as an antimicrobial. I don't think I have fungus or microbe issues with my scalp, but I'm attacking this from all angles. Castor oil also moisturizes your hair like crazy, sealing in the cuticle. I’ve heard of people who have hair growth of anywhere from ½ an inch to three inches in a month. While I haven’t taken a ruler to my roots just yet, my fingers are very much crossed. These things take time and patience, but let’s be honest here, for the most part, I have neither.

I’ve also been using Kiehl’s Magic Elixir on my roots and ends. It’s a blend of rosemary leaf and avocado oils. The texture of this product is much thinner than castor oil, so I can leave the house without looking like a giant grease ball. My hair feels as if it is getting a little thicker, so I’m hoping this product lives up to its name. Also, I will probably buy anything that is called magic.

Because my hair is super oily several days a week, I’ve had to be very particular about shampoo. I’ve needed something that washes the oil out, but is still gentle, which is why I’m all about Alterna Caviar Repair Instant Recovery Shampoo. Doesn't the name really say it all? This product is also sulfate and paraben free, so it doesn’t fade my color, but it still lathers as if it is entirely filled with chemicals even though it’s not.

I’ve also been going conditioner crazy, alternating between three different ones, which are Alterna Caviar Repair Instant Recovery Conditioner, Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Mask, and L’Ange Silk Venom Keratin Treatment Mask (use coupon code AMANDA for 30% off). Three different conditioners sounds excessive, but it's not because my hair always looks better when I switch things up. These also have different purposes. The L’Ange mask builds keratin, so you can’t use it more than twice a week. I use the Alterna Mask to restore moisture, which it does in spades and the Alterna Conditioner is great for when I’m too busy to commit to a mask or when I am air drying my hair.

Speaking of air drying, I’m trying to do that more often because more heat = more damage. There are three great products I’ve found for airdrying. The first is Alterna Bamboo Beach Breeze Dry Balm. I have naturally wavy hair and love a good beach wave look.  This balm is also a great multitasker because it protects your hair against UV rays, salt water, and chlorine. I know it’s fall, but I live in California and it was 96 degrees yesterday, so clearly, the whole seasons thing isn’t a part of my pumpkin spiced life.

Once my hair dries, I refresh my waves with Alterna Bamboo Beach Ocean Waves Tousled Texture Spray. This product does all the same things as a sea salt spray, sans the damaging effects of salt. I also use it post curling wand to define my beach waves instead of hairspray.

If I’m letting my hair air dry, but plan to flatiron before the next wash, I use Garnier Fructis Smooth Air Dry Sleek Anti-Frizz Cream . It’s scented like fruity heaven.

In addition to using lots of new products and changing up my hair routine, I’ve literally been eating vitamins like candy. I’m hoping chowing down Alive Prenatal Gummies and Nature Made Hair/Skin/Nails Adult Gummies will do the trick. While I’m not pregnant, taking prenatals is rumored, but not scientifically proven to stimulate hair growth. But I don’t care. At this point, I’ll try anything.

I Went On The Doctors TV Show To Discuss Long Lasting Lipgloss

Last week I appeared on the syndicated talk show, The Doctors to talk about long lasting lipgloss with two other bloggers. While I'm generally a positive person, I was less than enthused by the product, but I'd probably use it again for parties and events.

It was such a fun experience. Thank you so much again to the team at The Doctors for having me on.

Beach Waves Live With L'ange Hair

lange pic.JPG

Yesterday, I had the privilege of taking over L’ange Hair’s Facebook to do a live beach wave tutorial with their curling wand. It was so much fun and I was able to answer lots of questions about the product line. Hopefully, this is the first of many collabs with L’ange.

This whole thing came about because I’m on a mission to become Mandy With The Good Hair. The kind people at L’ange read my post and got in touch with me offering help, products and hair tools.

I did the takeover at L’ange’s headquarters where there is even an absolutely insta-worthy studio for this kind of thing. They were super generous and I was able to give everyone watching live a sweet deal—30% off everything on their website. If you missed it, don’t worry, watch below and save 30% too. Just click here to go to L'ange's site and use the promo code AMANDA.

Here are the products used in the tutorial:

25mm Curling Wand

This wand not only looks pretty on your bathroom sink (it’s rose gold and blush—seriously), it’s made of titanium and heats up in a matter of seconds. It doesn’t matter what hair type you have. It’s perfect for all hair types to create everything from sexy, messy beach waves to curls.

Rival Heat Shield

You know when you use a heat protector on your hair, you hear it singe and wonder WTF just happened? That doesn’t happen with this product. Spritz on, wait a few seconds and get styling. Your hair will sizzle but not in the “I just burned it off” kind of way.

Deja Vu Dry Shampoo

The problem with most dry shampoos is that they leave a white, chalky residue in your hair. Gross! This dries clear. If you don’t believe me, watch the video. I sprayed it on my hand.

Salt + Sea Texturizing Spray

This sets fresh beach waves perfectly. Or put your hair in up in a bun, spritz and leave overnight for some am hair sexiness.

Grand Debut Root Booster

Get rid of blah hair in seconds by using the Root Booster. After spraying, lift your roots from the bottom.

Satin Nectar Nourishing Gloss

For instant shine, use a few pumps in your hand and apply to your hair, especially the ends.

Thank you so much to L'ange, Tahari ASL for the top and J Webber Jewelry for the necklace.

Hair Shamed No More: I’m Determined To Become Mandy With The Good Hair

This was the last time I liked my hair. Also the last time I had a decent battery charge.

This was the last time I liked my hair. Also the last time I had a decent battery charge.

Hi, my name is Amanda and I have bad hair, but maybe I don’t have to. Perhaps I’ve been using the wrong products or I’m not trying hard enough. I can’t determine just one cause of my bad hair—I mean I can name a few, but I am determined to do what it takes to fix this problem.

Now, I know you’re thinking that my hair isn’t that bad.  Sure, worse hair most certainly exists. But that doesn’t change how I feel about myself. I realize I devote too much energy to feeling self-conscious about my hair. It isn’t serving me. I’m driving myself (and possibly my husband) completely crazy.

Naturally, my hair is kind of like Carrie Bradshaw’s but dry and overly processed (read: bleach blonde) with the bonus of split ends. It also breaks more easily than a five-year-old playing with her mom’s Baccarat Butterfly collection.

I had extensions for a year and took them out a while ago. The plan was to was to air dry my hair and extensions. I had gorgeous mermaid hair for a while. But a year of extensions was still damaging. And no matter how amazing your extensions look, a little wind or even a slight of the hand can cause the tape, a bead or weft (yes, I had all three kinds) to show. Unless you have a glamsquad 24 hours a day (hello Erika Jayne), extensions never look perfect. They’re also annoying if you workout. I thought extensions were the solution to my problem, but they weren’t. So, I decided to let it bleed and be extension free for over six months now. At first it wasn’t bad, but now my hair is just awful. It also turns out I’m not the only one who sees my hair this way.

I had a recent experience that brought me to my breaking point. I described what happened in detail on my podcast with Abby Stern. I was at Beautycon and both my intern and Ali had left. My feet were tired from standing for hours in Manolo Blahniks, but I was still rallying. As I walked around, I encountered a woman who I will call Washed Up Bitch, or WUB for short. She asked me if I wanted to sit and try her hair extensions. All I heard was sit.

As we made small talk, WUB kept telling me how pretty I was, much like a Disney villain about to poison me. She put the halo extensions in my hair and complimented me in the most backhanded way I’ve ever heard in my life. She said that everything about me was beautiful and sexy, but my hair was bad. Those are words I hear enough from myself. I didn’t need to hear them from WUB. Although she offered me $1000 off (and asked if I could be a before and after picture for her website) she did not sell me a hairpiece that day. But WUB did sell me her opinions. They’ve been occupying my mind ever since.

Then earlier this week, I was on Kate Casey’s podcast talking about Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making The Team on CMT. I was criticizing one of the judges for not looking perfect on the show because she has what appears to be acne scars on her face. Acne scars are an unfortunate problem that many people suffer from. But it shouldn’t be a problem for a woman who not only has the means and resources to get rid of them, but is also on television. I’m sure a local doctor could fix this issue in exchange for an Instagram post or a Tweet. So why isn’t she doing everything she can? And then I realized for so many reasons that I sounded like a total hypocrite. Because I haven’t done everything I can to fix my beauty problem. And now, I am going to do it. I’m going balls to the wall to get good hair. If I have to eat it, apply it or inject it, I’ve decided I’m going to do everything I can to get good hair without extensions.

So, what’s the plan? It’s going to take a village of products. I’ll let you what they are next week…

EDIT: So I've had some feedback about this post. Look, I know it's not easy to get rid of acne scars, but this woman's job is to judge other people on their looks. Also, I know I can be a very critical person both of myself and others.

Beautycon 2017 Recap Part II: More More More

Bc neon.JPG

So by now you think all I want to talk about is Beautycon 2017. It’s not that I’m obsessed, it’s that there was just so much to cover. So, if you haven’t read Part I or listened to the podcast, which was pretty incredible, definitely check out those links.

Without any further adieu, here are some more of my favorite products, brands and discoveries from the event.

La Roche-Posay

Did you know you could use La Roche-Posay micellar water to clean your makeup brushes? Now you do! Omg! Just pour some in a cup with your brushes and leave it overnight (that’s what I do, but a few hours is probably fine), rinse with tap water and let air dry. No soap necessary.

Beauty Blender

I’m the worst because I feel like I never use these things the right way. Holly, who is a rep for Beauty Blender explained to me that you put the blender in a bowl of clean water, squeeze out the excess and then use it to dab on your makeup.  Listen to the podcast to hear every little detail so you can overthink over using your Blender the right way.

Holly also stressed the importance of washing your Blender. They come with a little bar of special soap or you can buy a liquid cleaner. After washing your sponge, don’t throw it back in your makeup case until you let it air dry fully. If not, you end up with a moldy mess.

Tammy Taylor Nails

Tammy Taylor herself gave me the best nail tip ever! I don’t know about you, but my gel polish sometimes chips. It’s not the polish’s fault, but I’m clumsy. For example, a ladder fell on my hand last week. How does that even happen, right? So annoying! Anyway, Tammy revealed it is totally possible to touch up gel chips at home without a UV box. Just carefully paint on the gel polish and keep your hand in direct sunlight until it dries. Don’t try this for a whole manicure, but it totally works for a minor fix in a pinch, especially if a trip to the salon just isn’t going to happen.

The Wet Brush

If you are as concerned about hair breakage as much as I am (I’m down to thinking about it fifteen times a day now), you need a Wet Brush in your life. This brush is designed to detangle your hair when it’s wet without pulling it out like a comb alone can do. Depending on your hair, you can use it by itself or before combing. Total game changer.

Rimmel London

I didn’t realize I needed Rimmel London’s Insta Conceal and Correct Palette until I tried it. It has three different types of concealer— a skin toned one for under the eyes, a green color to counter redness and a purple shade for dullness. The amount of product is generous, but the packaging is the perfect size and even has a mirror, so it’s easy to travel with. Don’t we all need extra concealer when we travel?

I really like the idea of this brand because they combine natural ingredients and science. To me, this means less chemicals, but more thought into what really works. They gave me a sample of their Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm and I took it to New York.  I was skeptical at first, but it's been a dream for traveling because I don't have to worry that it will leak or be confiscated by the TSA. Nightmare averted.

Lumene is a really affordable, but quality skincare line from Finland. Their Arctic Berry Cocktail sounds like something you want to drink, but actually, it’s for your face. An oil and primer in one, this is a dream multi-tasker for the AM, so you can keep your face hydrated and set your makeup for the day.

If you like the idea of microblading but not the permanency, pain or cost, Wunderbrow is probably for you. It’s a semi-permanent brow gel that lasts for up to three days. Because it has a fibrous texture your brows appear real. Very easy to apply and natural looking—Wunderbrow is going into regular rotation for me.

Things We're Too Lazy To Blog About Podcast: Beautycon 2017. We came. We saw. We Contoured.

Let’s cut to the chase. Listen on iTunesGoogle PlayStitcherAudioBoom, or stream/download below.

Live(ish) from Beautycon 2017. We came. We saw. We Contoured. If you missed the event, don’t worry because this is the next best thing.

We interviewed reps from a handful of amazing brands including Kopari, Morphe, Tammy Taylor Nails, Pinkie Swear, Carol’s Daughter, Kate Somerville, Jergens, NYX and Beauty Blender (finally, a definitive answer on how to use those spongy things!).

One week later, we discuss our reflections from the event and what we realized is the easiest way to learn the best tips and tricks from all of your favorite brands. This is probably our most informative episode yet.

And yes, we recorded all of this in the VIP Room. Who do you think we are?

F-It Fridays: Prepare For Fall With Shiseido & Get A Free Gift For Adulting

It’s that time of year again. The summer is ending, but it’s not quite fall yet. In just a few weeks the weather will change, which means your skin is probably going to go bonkers. Oily becomes dry and dry becomes desert-like. So it’s important to prepare yourself in advance. But don’t overthink it—just check out Shiseido instead.

The reason why I am suggesting that you prepare for Fall now is that Shiseido is going to reward you in a big way. With any $75 purchase, you receive an exclusive (who doesn’t love exclusive?) Hello Tokyo tote (pictured above) with a deluxe sample set. If that doesn’t sound exciting enough, you get to choose from five different sets, so you can actually use the right products for your skin concerns. When was the last time you were rewarded for adulting?

All of the sets contain everything you need for a full skincare routine. Also, how cute is the tote bag?

If you need some product suggestions, here are a few of my personal faves. But don't worry— everything from Shiseido is good.

I’m obsessed with Shiseido Ultimate Cleansing Oil. If you double cleanse, which I sometimes do, this is the first product you want to use in your routine. It’s formulated to remove sunscreen and foundation. So you can use it after a long day at the beach when you’ve reapplied your sunscreen 100 times or after sitting for eight hours with a face full of makeup at work (and let's be real—also happy hour). And if you’ve had too many cocktails to complete a full double cleanse before bed, don’t worry. You might be left with regrets from the evening (he was a jerk anyway), but you won’t be left with any excess product on your face.

One of my other favorite Shiseido products is their Pureness Foaming Cleansing Fluid. I’ve been using it since high school. It’s not that I’m loyal (okay, maybe a little)—it’s that this cleanser is that good. It’s rich, foamy and makes your face feel squeaky clean. Plus, you only need a small amount (I use a quarter to half a pump), so it should last you until Thanksgiving(ish). So you can check buying cleanser off your list for a while, which means more time for cocktails and naps.

Another fall essential is the Full Correction Lip Treatment. If the matte lipstick trend is making your lips dry AF, you need this product. Sorry, I don’t mean to be a downer, but it’s only going to get worse once it starts to get windy. You need to pay extra attention to your lips. The people you kiss will thank you for this.

So, seriously check out Shiseido now because the free gift offer only lasts until 8/27/17. Get your fall skincare taken care of, get a travel set, don’t have a fight with the TSA and look beautiful. You don’t have to thank me now for telling you this, but feel free to thank me when you don’t have to retouch your post Labor Day selfies.

*This was a partner post, but you all know I love Shiseido and have mentioned the brand several times on this blog already. Plus this offer is awesome and you need to know about it.

Still Exhausted: Best Of Beautycon 2017 Part I

Beautycon 2017 was such an incredible event. I still can’t believe how much fun it was and how many new products and brands I discovered. In fact, it’s way too much to cover one post, so I’ve decided to do this as a three part series including a podcast, which will go live on August 21st.

So many different brands came out to the event. I was familiar with many of them and there were others that I had literally never heard of. (I don’t know EVERYTHING). I spoke with so many experts who shared their best tips and tricks with me. Here are some of my fav products from the event and insider info that I just can't keep to myself. But then again, do I ever keep anything to myself?

I tried Smashbox’s Always On liquid lipstick in Shockaholic (I know, shut up). The color was so bold and really stayed on. It’s perfect for those nights when you are going to drink a lot and take selfies. You will be totally covered. No need to put down your cocktail to reapply.

Kate Somerville

I finally tried their Holy Grail product, ExfoliKate and it was exactly what I was missing in my skincare routine. As many of you know, I’m all about the retinol, but it’s made my skin peel like crazy. My face has needed some serious sloughing for weeks now. (Why do you think I haven’t posted that much on Instagram?)

ExfoliKate is a physical and chemical exfoliator in one. All you have to do is rub it in for 30 seconds and leave it on for two minutes. It’s way less of a commitment than a facial mask and actually works instantly. Seriously, I don’t want to say it’s magic but close enough. Also, I’m super sensitive and it wasn’t irritating at all.

I also tried UncompliKated Soft Focus Makeup Setting Spray SPF 50. We all know how important sunscreen is. Blah, blah, blah, etc. This is a dream multitasker because it sets your makeup and gives you sun protection. It also takes seconds to apply. You can use it and stop complaining about how sunscreen messes up your foundation because this spray actually enhances your face.

Laneige is a K-Beauty brand that is currently available from Sephora’s website and will be available at retail locations in the upcoming weeks. They are owned by fancy pants cosmetics company Amore Pacific. The brand has been around since 1994, which was way before K-Beauty was a thing, so you know it’s got to be good.

They gave me a sample of their Water Sleeping Mask, which I almost don’t want to use because the packaging is too pretty. Apparently, they also have a Lip Sleeping Mask and I’m kind of dying to try it. My. Lips. Are. So. Dry. Too many matte lipsticks.

I first discovered this brand in Ali’s bathroom (not even a joke) and I am now obsessed. Morphe makes the most gorgeous eyeshadow palettes I’ve ever seen. They have multiple textures including shimmery and matte in one palette, which is not the norm for most palettes. The entire line is very affordable, but also lux, which we all know never happens.

Morphe gifted me an entire kit and I can’t wait to try everything. Trust me when I tell you to keep this brand on your radar and when they are everywhere like rompers at a BBQ, you can take credit for knowing about Morphe before it was a thing.

Carol’s Daughter

I was under the wrong impression about this brand. I thought their products were only for black skin and hair. BIG MISTAKE! As someone with painfully dry, curly hair, I regret not investigating Carol’s Daughter earlier.

At the event, I was able to try their Almond Cookie Shea Soufflé. It has the nicest creamy texture and smells like heaven. But I was hankering to try their hair products, so I actually went to the drugstore and picked up the Almond Milk Ultra Nourishing Hair Mask. It made my hair so soft and smelled amazing.

Usually, quality hair products don’t smell good. Why is that? Can someone please explain why the shampoo from the 99 Cents Store smells like Heaven and $99 shampoo smells like car exhaust combined with rotting fruit? But seriously, this hair mask smells like sugared almonds from a candy store. I really want to try the entire Carol’s Daughter line.

Not the shoes. Also, ew. Croc flat irons are awesome. They gifted me their Plug Iron, which has a detachable cord. I love the idea of a detachable cord because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve melted my hair tool cords. (My fault!) Although the Croc is small, it’s mighty and heats up to 410°. I used it at home and I actually prefer it to my larger flat iron. That being said, I really want to try their Infrared flat iron.

Stay tuned for the podcast and Part II next week!

F-It Fridays: Favorite Trader Joe's Beauty Products

Happy Friday! It feels nothing like a Friday for me right now. I’m going to BeautyCon tomorrow with my co-host Ali. We’re going to try to record our podcast there, so it will be a totally different process than what we normally do. On Sunday, I’m going to the Propel Fitness CO:LABS Festival and finally getting to meet my editor from A Sweat Life because she lives in Chicago.

So, what does all of this have to do with an F-It Friday post anyway? A lot. I’ve had such a busy week. It looks like things are going to slow down for me never, which is probably a good thing. During times when I don’t have a minute to spare, I’m really grateful for one-stop shopping. While I’m generally not a fan of Los Angeles supermarkets (listen to the first episode of the podcast, I rant all about how terrible they are), I LOVE Trader Joe’s. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time (well not a lot, but like two minutes every time I go) in their beauty aisle, which isn’t really an aisle but more like three shelves. But I like their less is more approach, especially when I’m short on time. It also means not going to multiple stores. Here are some of my TJ’s must-haves.

Face & Body Sunscreen SPF 30

I like this better than any other sunscreen I’ve bought at the drugstore or health food store. It’s not greasy or smelly, absorbs quickly and gets the job done. For $5.99, I slather it on, share it and usually find I have multiple bottles in different beach bags.

Lavender Salt Scrub

Lavender Salt Scrub is a great multitasker because it exfoliates and moisturizes. The lavender scent is very relaxing and perfect for a pre-bedtime shower. The oil really penetrates your skin so you can even skip the post shower body lotion.

French Orange Blossom Honey Liquid Soap

I like to keep a bottle of this on my bathroom sink. It smells EXPENSIVE--like a hotel in Paris or a fancy mansion in the Hamptons. I challenge you to a scent test with any fancy hand soap and TJ’s will win every single time. The only problem is the bottle isn’t big enough. Trader Joe’s People-- if you are reading this, can you please sell this soap by the gallon? Thank you!

Organic Argan Oil

I actually tried this for the first time yesterday. While I get nervous about trying new hair products, I bought it on a whim and I’m so happy I did. I was so busy that I actually let my hair air dry. It came out so pretty and soft, I almost can’t believe it. For $6.99, you’ll be tempted to use a lot, be forewarned, a little argan oil goes a long way. The packaging is also great because it has a little dropper thing and you can dispense the exact amount you want.

Refresh Citrus Body Wash

Refresh is the right word here! I usually don’t like most body washes because they are overly perfumed or dry out my skin, but the simple citrus scent feels great after the beach or a workout. For $2.99, I can use as much as I want (I can go through a gallon of body wash in two weeks, easily) and not feel guilty about it at all.

Tea Tree Oil

I’m obsessed with oils and this might be my new favorite one. Tea Tree oil is good for acne and a natural treatment for athlete’s foot, which is something I’m really prone to. Gross? TMI—sorry, I’ve had this problem since I was a kid and I know I’m not alone. Sometimes, I just open the bottle and take a whiff to clear my sinuses.

Happy National Lipstick Day!

Happy National Lipstick Day! If we are going to celebrate one cosmetic as a nation, it should be lipstick. After all, lipstick is magic. We apply it and our face changes. Lipstick is always there for us when we need it. Seriously, I have at least three or four lipsticks or glosses in my pursue at all times, so I can have an automatic pick me up whether my lips are feeling a little dry or my mood is a little meh. Also, when someone asks you for a pen… just kidding…you’re SOL, lipstick makes an awful pen.

Here are a few fun facts about lipstick you can share with people and sound like a total smart mouth--

The average woman spends $15,000 on makeup in her lifetime of which $1,780 is on lipstick.

Does anyone else read this and realize they are so NOT the average woman?

Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and other early feminists wore bright red lipstick as symbol of their defiance at the 1912 NYC Suffragette rally.

So can we stop staying lipstick isn’t feminist?

About 81% of American women wear lipstick compared to 70% of French women, who prefer a more natural look.

Or maybe they just lied when taking this survey because we all know how awesome French makeup is.

During economic downturns, sales of lipstick increase because it’s an affordable luxury. This is known as The Lipstick Affect.

Don’t we all know this?

In 1828, Guerlain introduced the first lipstick, which was more like a pomade.

I wonder if they applied it with a lip brush or were just lazy like I am and used their finger?

So are you treating yourself to a lipstick today?

Here are a few of my favorites—

Liquid Matte

I love a liquid matte because it looks like a regular lipstick but applies like a gloss, which I always think is easier. Huda Liquid Matte in Jetsetter is so pretty no matter what look I'm going for and it's the color of a cocktail. Plus, it’s also long lasting so I can drink and not reapply every five minutes.

Red lipstick gives you INSTANT sex appeal. If you wake up feeling less than your hottest, red lipstick is all you need. I’ve said it before, and I’m pretty sure I’ll say it again, Nars Cruella is universally amazing on everyone. It’s a velvet matte lip pencil that goes on smoothly and is really easy to apply. Another thing I love about it is that if you aren’t a lip liner person (I aspire to be-- but I’m just not), you can use this pencil to outline your lips and fill in without any additional product.

If your lips tend to get dry, lipstick can go horribly wrong, which is why I love Fresh’s Sugar. It moisturizes like a lip balm but gives you the color you want, so it’s the best of all worlds. There are 13 different colors, but my personal fav is Tulip.

After discovering it by accident, one of my favorite lip products of all time is Wet N Wild’s Balm Stain in A Stiff Pink. For just $2.99, it’s the perfect cheap treat. It’s a fun, bright pink and stays on way longer than the price would make you think.

I’ve been obsessed with a bold lip this summer, which is why I really like Chantecaille’s Hollyhock. It’s an orange-based pinky red kind of color that’s perfect for day and compliments a tan. I like to wear it and go very minimal on my eyes.

Almost Clear Gloss

Sometimes, I just want to have just the tiniest hint of color on my lips, which is why I like Paul & Joe’s Limited Edition Tinted Lipgloss in Musing. It is the subtlest pink color. Your lips will look just as pretty as the St. Tropez styled packaging.

Lipstick looks best on smooth, exfoliated lips. E.L.F. Lip Exfoliator is the easiest way to get the job done. It has grains of sugar to easily de-flake and shea butter, avocado oil and jojoba oil to leave your lips soft. You can apply it as you would any regular lipstick and then tissue off. Use it every day, if possible.

Superior Skin Giveaway

There are two things I know all of you love—great skincare products and swag, which is why I’m excited to announce a giveaway I’m doing with Female Blogger RT, Superior Skin and several other bloggers (check them out, their links are below). Yep. It’s a whole big collab thing.

First of all, can we talk about how much I love Female Blogger RT? Follow them on Twitter right now because they retweet the best content from female bloggers. Literally, all they do is help other women! From my estimates, I think they’ve racked up approximately 1 zillion extra karma points. And now they are about to acquire a few more

So, what is this amazing swag you could win? A bottle of GrenzCine™ which is an anti-aging serum worth over $300. The active ingredients in this product are Vitamin C (which is not just for colds and OJ, your skin NEEDS this stuff) and a patented molecule called Polyamine DAB.

GrenzCine™ was developed by Vivier Pharma and Dr. Kenneth Dolynchuk, who is a plastic surgeon. You know how I feel about plastic surgeons and skincare! He formulated this product through over 30 years of clinical research (which is a LONG TIME) and ended up with over five patents.

So, what are the benefits of using GrezCine™?

·      It makes your skin thicker and firmer.

·      This product boosts the affects of your other products and procedures such as retinoids (you know I’m obsessed with retinoids), chemical peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion, laser treatments and any old school exfoliation we know is a part of your routine.

·      Activating collagen in your face.

·      It tells wrinkles and fine lines to go away-- seriously!

·      Overall, this product just makes your skin look brighter, younger and all around more fabulous.

So what do you have to do to score yourself a free bottle?

Just follow the directions below. By the way, if you aren’t a giveaway person, I want you to know we are giving away three bottles, so your chances of winning are better than you probably anticipated. Also, if you’ve made it this far, you probably are a giveaway person.
