I Left My House: Regard Magazine Spring 2018 Cover Party

Main-cover-crop-final2-sharpness.jpg

I'm thinking of starting a new feature on this blog called I Left My House because I've been going to so many cool events lately. On April 3rd,  I had the privilege of attending the party for the Spring 2018 issue of Regard Magazine at The Riviera 31 inside the Sofitel. If you are wondering why I don't have a picture of myself at the event, it's because I had a bad reaction to raw juice and was so ill that I nearly missed the party. I'll spare you those details, but I'll share the fun ones of the event with you.

First of all, I love Regard Magazine. It's a digital publication filled with beautiful photos and fun celeb interviews. The Spring 2018 cover features the Stars of Crackle’s original drama series, The OathRyan Kwanten, Katrina Law and Cory Hardict.

There were so many celebs at this party, including Arlen Escarpeta (The Oath), Gretchen Rossi, Slade Smiley, Camila Banus (Days of Our Lives), Patti Stanger (Millionaire Matchmaker, obvs),  Petri Byrd (Judge Judy), Celeste Thorson, Carrie Bernans (Black Panther), Carly Hughes (ABC's American Housewife), Nicky Whelan (Hall Pass, Inconceivable), Santana Dempsey (Scandal, Dear White People), Zackary Momoh (Netflix 7 Seconds), Anthony Pazos and Tess Broussard.

20180403-073A1873-SheriDeterman.jpg

I'll share a little gossip with you. Gretchen looked gorgeous and I had a really nice conversation with Slade. Don't believe what you read about them. They are both so lovely in person, especially Slade. And.... they're both coming on the podcast when we get back from Ali's maternity leave.

20180403-073A1311-SheriDeterman.jpg

There were so many great sponsors of the event including Absolut Elyx, Gretchen Christine LuggageBloom Mineral Beauty (their exfoliator is life chaning), Impressions Vanity, Savvy Travelers (these are saving my life lately), Twila True Beauty, Twila True Fine JewelryBeverly Hills Rejuvenation Center, Kut from the Kloth, and SoCal Mirror Booth.

20180403-073A1435-SheriDeterman.jpg

Don't be jealous of my swag. Okay, totally be jealous of my swag.

There was also a silent auction to benefit The True Souix Hope Foundation because karma.

Everything You Need To Throw The Perfect Party

IMG_0614.jpg

Two Sundays ago, my closest friend and podcast co-host, Ali Levine had a co-ed baby shower at The Rockwell in Los Angeles. It was such a beautiful party and I can't wait for Baby J, as we are calling her right now. After the party, I was thinking about why it was so good and I realized it's because it had every element of a perfect party.  So whether you are throwing a baby shower or any kind of event, here is a checklist of all the inspo you need.

Great Invitations

Screen-Shot-2018-02-26-at-7.54.19-PM-2.png

Start things right with the invite. I loved Ali's, which were designed by Paper and Poise. Even if you are sending electronically and not a paper invite, you need to make it pretty. Protip: If you can't use Paper and Poise, make your own with Canva.

Location Location Location

IMG_1707.jpeg

Location is everything. The Rockwell in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles was the perfect location because it's outdoors but also shaded over, so the temperature doesn't get too hot or cold. You also didn't feel claustrophobic. The party was also on its own floor and there was a sign that showed everyone where to go. They also had a parking lot in the back and a fairly good amount of street parking. If you live in a driving city, you need good parking or everyone will be annoyed with you even before the party begins.

A Pretty Cake

IMG_2211.jpg

I heart cake so hard. Nothing could have been prettier than Ali's cake from Rockiies Cakes.  And yes, it was just as yummy as it looked. Also, there is no such thing as too much fondant. The cake pops from Peach Tree & Belle were also a nice touch.

Beautiful Decor

Screen-Shot-2018-02-26-at-2.42.13-PM.png

Flowers always look beautiful and appropriate for any occasion. Ali's boxed roses from L'Amour Toujours were a dream. The box is such an interesting way to not only display the flowers but it makes transporting them so much easier.

Swag

A Party For A Real Housewife's Really Cute Bag Line

DSC07390.jpg

Gretchen Rossi is one of my favorite Real Housewives. A few months ago, I interviewed her for A Sweat Life and I’ve been loving on her Gretchen Christine handbag line for a while now. So, I was super excited to attend the Gretchen Christine PopUpParty™ at Impressions in West Hollywood. So many celebs showed up to support her including Peggy Sulahian, Ashley Fargo, Beril Ackay, Lisa Arasheben, Craig Ramsay (From Bravo’s Newlyweds and my podcast), Caitlin O’Conner, Rachel McCord, Ali Levine and Emilia McCarthy. And yes, if you were wondering, Gretchen is absolutely beautiful, nice, and super tiny in person.

It was also great to see all of the Gretchen Christine handbags IRL. I was really surprised because we all know celeb fashion lines are either amazing or a complete disaster. Luckily, the first description applies to this one. Photos don’t really do it justice. Furthermore, every accessory comes with bonus karma points because they are made of vegan leather.

Impressions also carries her new luggage line, which will basically make everyone at the airport jealous of you. Seriously, not kidding. Keep your eyes on your GC at the baggage claim because people will be tripping over themselves to steal it from you. My favorite bag is the Voyageur Matelassé in White Marble.

Made of quilted nylon and vegan leather, it has 360° spin roller wheels and a bumper-guard at the base. It is sold as a set with a matching purse, which is so cute it almost shouldn't be allowed. You can carry it separately or slide into the trolley handle when you are running through the airport in heels trying not to miss your flight (or is that just me?). The silver clasp also makes it easy to open and close, which is important if you are doing last minute airport shopping (and by if, I mean when). The modern marble print is so clean looking and really stands out. I really want one of these for myself (hint, hint, Gretchen, please swag me out, girl).

Gretchen also debuted her collab nail polish with Twila True. This line has a 5 free formula, which means it doesn’t contain camphor, DBP, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin and toluene. But more importantly, the colors are absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to see what Grethen does next.

Eight Ways Valentine’s Day Doesn’t Have To Suck or Pink Things I Love That You Should Buy Yourself Because It’s Totally Alright To Feel Awful Today

IMG_20180214_155732_911.jpg

Happy Valentine’s Day! Sorry, is this annoying? When I was single I hated Valentine’s Day because obvi. But even as someone who has been married for two wonderful years, I’m kind of not feeling V-Day this year. While nothing horrible is happening, everything has gone wrong. It started when my husband’s gift was delivered late and he ended up opening it accidentally. I love to surprise him and that pleasure was taken from me. I don’t know whether to cry or call the vendor and start screaming. Okay, I’m being dramatic, but then last night, our Netflix and Chill plans were foiled when we learned that the new season of Love was not being released on Valentine’s Day this year. While maybe we should have realized this sooner, the previous two seasons of the show have both debuted on Valentine’s Day. At least the trailer is out, but it’s not quite the same. So, this makes me realize that no matter who you are or what your relationship status is, Valentine’s Day can still suck. But it is also a great opportunity to practice self-care and self-love. Whether it’s buying yourself a treat below (I’ve found so many good ones) or treating yourself to Flywheel and Starbucks (I’m sipping some iced tea right now in my sweaty activewear), if you need to give yourself some extra love today or the only person you smooch is your puppy—that’s totally okay.

Note Cosmetics Lipsticks and Lipglosses

Note to self: Put Note Cosmetics on your radar. I’ve been really impressed with this line because it’s paraben-free, cruelty-free and so wallet-friendly it’s practically free (or like close enough). My lips are loving all of their pink and red lipglosses and lipsticks, but they have a full line of makeup.

Beth Bender Highlighters

bbb_princess_sweet_cheeks_1_2.jpg

I met Beth Bender IRL when she was on my podcast. She was such a doll and I was really impressed at the amount of work and how much of her personal touch she puts into making every product in her line. Sweeten Up and Pik Nik highlighters are my favorite pinks. Apply them using the fan brush and prepare to have your face game changed. I also use these highlighters instead of eyeshadow when I’m feeling lazy, which is often.

SPELA Liquid Mattes

Whether you are smooching another person or your pet, you what you put on your lips should stay on your lips. Applying lipstick should be fun, not another task you need to put on your to-do list. SPELA’s liquid mattes stay on strong but aren’t drying. Super rich in color, they are vegan, cruelty-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free and non-toxic! I mean, don’t eat it, but like go for that ice cream cone.

Urban Decay Naked3 Palette

urban-decay-naked-3-pakistan.jpg

I think I love Urban Decay’s Naked3 Palette as much as I love my dogs and cupcakes. Every single color is good. Like I feel seriously conflicted choosing which ones I want to use because they are all so good. It’s the right way to do pink eye makeup without looking like you have pinkeye or an unhealthy obsession with the 80’s.

Alacran Tequila Pink Limited Edition

22539978_1898740160166392_2703213996098606088_n.jpg

When all else fails, DRINK. Seriously, if you feel bad today, go out and get some Alacran Tequila. And do it guilt free because they donate 50 % of sales from their limited edition pink bottle to awareness breast cancer awareness charities. Made of 100% Weber Blue Agave tequila, it tastes smooth and delicious on the rocks, in a cocktail or if need be, straight out of the bottle (I’m not judging you).

Roxx Polish Rose Quartz Infused Vegan Lip Balm

I’m kind of obsessed with Rose Quartz lately because it’s the crystal of love and self-care. I give myself an extra dose every night. Before I go to bed, I alwasy I apply this lip balm to my lips. It also smells like candy.

Gretchen Christine Cassandra Credit Card + Coin Purse

Cassandra_-_Credit_Card_Coin_Purse-4_51678730-d554-4d31-b143-7d7fe5897186_1500x1500.jpg

You know when a whole wallet is a whole ordeal? That’s why I love this little Gretchen Christine credit card holder and coin purse. Made of pink vegan leather, it’s flanked by shiny gold card slots. It also has a ring to hold your keys. It’s a sweet little treat that makes life easier. And if you are being a #girlboss, it totally works as a business card holder.

Parfait Sandrine Plunge Longline Bra & Underwear

Can we talk about lingerie? It’s kind of magical. I’m sick of people thinking you should wear it for your partner! Wear it for yourself! I always feel so much better when I put on a sexy bra and panties. It radiates through me. Furthermore, as someone who needs extra support (I’m a D Cup), Parfait has me covered. I love the Sandrine Plunge Longline Bra and matching underwear because the look is a little retro.

Eighteen Holiday Gifts Under $25

season-1985856_1280.jpg

Let’s talk about when it’s okay to be late—for a party, a dinner reservation (but no more than fifteen minutes) or to see family you hate (then just don't show up at all). But it’s NOT okay to be late with holiday gifts.

While I know it’s possible to pick up an emergency gift card at the supermarket or pharmacy—this really shows the recipient you couldn't care less . Lucky for you, it is completely possible to find a great gift without spending a lot of money or making much effort. Because who has time for that? Here are eighteen holiday gifts under $25 for every person on your list. If you’re spending more, just buy more than one.

For more holiday gifts, check out the Things We’re Too Lazy To Blog About Podcast gift guide or the actual episode.

DISCLAIMER: Prices can change, but the awesomeness of these gifts cannot.

Colour Me Good Books

711kqVnk7ZL.jpg

Omg, I love the Colour Me Good series by Mel Elliot. Give your friend who is a fan of Ryan Gosling, Benedict Cumberbatch, or James Franco the ultimate gift. There’s also a Taylor Swift book, but it’s currently sold out. Add a set of colored pencils to make a package as complete as the subjects of these books.

Suck My Wick Candles

Candle-preneur Kyle Blitch was just on my podcast and he is hilarious. These candles not only smell good, but they also make you laugh with names like Motion of the Ocean. They normally cost $34.99 each, but if you use promo code SUCKMYWICKMAS, you get $10 off.

L’Ange Stocking Stuffer Holiday Collection

Package_02_2048x2048-2.jpg

These ultra modern picture frames are super chic. Personalize the gift by including your own picture. It's a little more effort but totally worth it. There are several sizes currently on sale all under $20.

I need to pick my jaw up off the floor because I can’t believe this chic throw is on sale from West Elm for less than $15. You can also have it monogrammed for $9.50. What says you thought about things in advance more than a monogram?

Be Festive & Impressive: My Best Party Tips For The Holidays

bando-il-enamel_pin-be_nice-02_1024x1024.jpg

Do you want to throw one of those parties that everyone remembers in a good way? Lots of people think throwing a fabulous soiree (even if it is just in your living room) is a major ordeal. CTFD and listen to me. There is really only one thing you need to know. If you don't have a ton of time to plan, cooking skills, or a huge budget, whether you serve two people or 200 people (well, maybe not that many, but I can't think of 200 people I like), the same overall idea applies—being a good host is all about attention to detail. Here are a few of my best tips create a fun, fabulous and festive event that will keep your guests posting all weekend long.

Never Serve Your Food In The Package It Came In

Why is this my first tip? Because when people do this—It makes me insane. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been to someone’s house and they’ve served hummus or salsa in the package it came in. USE A BOWL! Any bowl. This takes seconds and classes up your event exponentially.

Cooking Isn’t Necessary, If You Aren’t A Chef

If you want to throw a party but last time you made your mom’s Swedish meatballs, you had to call the fire department, don’t bother. Go to Trader Joe’s and buy prepackaged apps like spanakopita and pigs in a blanket. If those aren’t your thing, there are tons of options. But be sure to heat everything up in the oven, NOT the microwave.

DO NOT SERVE ON STYROFOAM

This one is obvious, but not to everyone. Several years ago, I went to a dinner at someone’s house for a religious holiday and they served on Styrofoam. I’m pretty sure even G-d was disgusted. First of all, it’s AWFUL for the environment. It also looks tacky. While serving on regular plates is ideal, there are times when it's impractical or even impossible. That being said, not all disposable plates are created equally. Keep in mind that just because something is disposable, doesn’t mean it should look like something you want to throw out. There are so many stylish paper plate options available. Here are a few of them.

A Platter Makes A Party

If you entertain often, I think it’s important to have a section of platters. I have several I received as wedding gifts and while I don’t entertain as often I would like to, I love any opportunity to use them. My personal ones are from Kate Spade, Nambé, and Christophle, but while high-end is nice, it isn’t necessary. Target has tons of options. Another idea is to buy individual dinner plates and use them as platters, especially if you aren’t serving on a large table.

While serving on regular plates is ideal, there are times when serving on paper plates might make more sense. That being said, not all disposable plates are created equally. Just because something is disposable doesn’t mean it should look like something you want to throw out. There are so many stylish paper plate options available. Here are a few that I really like.

Napkins Are Important

Cute cocktail napkins=napkins=coasters=food grease not everywhere=no coffee tables destroyed.

Make Fancy Water

It’s not just about drinking and driving or making sure you accommodate the hydrationally-challenged. But rather, it's about that one friend who gets wasted every year and acts epically annoying. Put some water in a pitcher. Throw fruit in it. Lemons, strawberries, cucumbers. It doesn’t matter. Pick one. People will drink it.

Create A Signature Cocktail

A basic bar is so boring. Make some signature holiday cocktails and serve from a pitcher. It’s minimal work for maximum glam.

Never Forget Dessert

Everyone likes dessert (and if you don’t—who are you?). Buy something fun for dessert like mini cupcakes from a local bakery or try my semi-secret semi-homemade cookie recipe.

Step One: Buy the refrigerated cookie dough in a tube from your local supermarket. I like Pillsbury Chocolate Chip, but any will do.

Step 2: Prepare according to the package’s directions.

Step 3: Cut off enough dough for a cookie.

Step 4: Ball the dough in your hands and flatten it out.

Step 5: Put in on a cookie sheet and bake according to directions.

Step 6: Fool everyone. None of your cookies will look alike so people assume it came from a recipe and what is essentially a plastic tube. Works. Every. Time.

Don’t Forget The Bathroom

Not to sound like your mom, but if you are having people over, make sure you have enough toilet paper, hand soap and a place for your guests to dry their hands. I always feel awkward when there aren’t guest towels or any kind of towel for that matter to dry my hands. I feel uncomfortable using your personal towel, but I am not going to wipe my hands on what I am wearing, which is inevitably dry clean only. Am I supposed to use toilet paper? Is your house a gas station? And don’t get me started on people who don’t have enough soap. What’s wrong with you? Also, a scented candle makes your bathroom more festive and less stinky.

*By the way, if you really want to be nice, that enamel pin from Ban.do pictured above makes a great stocking stuffer.

So Last Week...I Fly Like Paper, Get High Like Planes Edition

paper planes.jpg

What a week. Sorry if I’ve been a little MIA on the blog and social. I went to New York to see my mom for her birthday. It’s been fun, but I miss LA so much. I just want to go home and ignore everyone. But everyone knows that will most likely happen never. I've never needed a vacation so badly in my life. Does anyone want to send me on a press trip? Please?

Here are a few links I found while 30,000(ish) above the ground or while having my patience tested completely by the TSA. Can someone please tell me why are drug sniffing dogs so darn cute?

Adulting 101: How To Take Care Of Your Clothes

Being able to take care of your wardrobe is just as important as adulting(ish) life skills like knowing what to wear to a wedding or how to do your makeup. It’s not only about not accidentally dying white socks pink, or motivating yourself to go to the dry cleaners—it’s about knowing proper garment care. Clothing you treat well lasts longer, especially if it is an investment piece. It also just looks better on you.

Every Garment Has A Cheat Sheet

If you learn ONE thing from this post, let this be it. If you have no idea how to a garment is supposed to be cleaned, there are instructions on every label. From couture to Forever21, I promise you it’s there unless you accidentally cut it out. If you are looking for more than ten seconds, don’t enlist a search party—just turn the item inside out.

Learn How To Do Your Own Laundry

I don’t care if you have a housekeeper. So do I. She doesn’t do my laundry. Not to sound like your mom, but red wine is an accident waiting to happen at all times. Even if you don’t do your laundry on the regular, at least know how to do it. What if your housekeeper gets into an accident on the way to your house? What if she quits because she hates your generic Windex? Are you going to wear dirty underwear until you can find a replacement? Learn how to throw some clothes into a machine, move them into another machine and fold them.

All of this being said—don’t ask me to clean my house. I suck at all forms of cleaning except for laundry. Also, I hope your housekeeper never gets into an accident on the way to your house.

Remove Stains ASAP

I try to carry around a Tide To Go Stain Pen in my pocket for quick stain removal when I’m out. If you’re clumsy like I am and tend to spill things on yourself almost constantly, it’s a good idea. When you get home, spray on a spot treatment ASAP. I like Shout.

Your Cycle Has Nothing To Do With That Time Of The Month

I know every washing machine is different, but most of the time you are going to wash your clothes in the Normal Or Regular Cycle. If you are washing gross linens (you have a pet or a crazy sex life), choose Heavy Duty.

The Deal With Water Temperature

If you are only washing white clothes—use hot.

If you are washing anything you want to clean and not fade—wash in warm and rise in cold.

Some people wash everything in cold and use special cold detergent because it’s cheaper than using hot water. Don’t be cheap. Your underwear will thank you.

WTF Is Permanent Press?

I just learned this one myself. The Permanent Press cycle uses warm water and slows the spin cycle like someone who can’t stop looking at their phone in traffic. Choose this cycle for items that have a tendency to wrinkle.

The Gentle Cycle Is Your New BFF

I love the Gentle Cycle. I use it for things that aren’t even labeled for it because it helps keeps your clothes from wearing out. You know those cheap t-shirts you buy that last for a month? Want to make them last for a year? Use the gentle cycle.

I also use the Gentle Cycle for activewear. WHAT? WHAT? You read that correctly. This will change your life and make your activewear last much longer. If you don’t believe me, ask anyone who works at Sweaty Betty or Lululemon. They will tell you the same exact thing.

You Only Need Two Detergents

99% of the time, I use Tide Pods for my clothes. I prefer pods because liquid is heavy. Powdered detergent never dissolves and mostly offends me as a human being.

I know there are special detergents for activewear, but unless you have the world’s smallest washing machine, you probably aren’t going to wash your activewear alone. Use it if you like, but I personally think it’s unnecessary.

The only other detergent I use is Ecover, but mostly for hand washing lingerie and underwear. It also works in a pinch if I run out of Tide.

The Dryer Is Not Your Friend

I know it’s annoying to line dry your clothes because it is. But it literally takes three minutes to throw your stuff up on hangers over your bathtub. Unless you have a laundry room, but if you actually have a laundry room, you are probably better at adulting than I am and likely not reading this. Your clothing lasts so much longer if you line dry. You don’t have to do this for everything because line-drying socks is a nightmare. But, it’s a good rule of thumb for important(ish) things you wear outside.

If you have glass shower doors, invest in a pole. If you have a shower curtain, move it over and work with what you have. Throw a bathmat underneath to catch drips. If your bathroom has a fan, turn it on and keep the door open.

If line-dying sounds like too much work, at least use your dryer on a low setting so your clothing doesn’t get baked.

Also, use dryer sheets because they make everything soft. I know fabric softener exists, but this is easier and cheaper. I like Mrs. Meyers Clean Day dryer sheets because they smell good.

Find A Drycleaner You Like That’s Conveniently Located

A good drycleaner is your wardrobe’s best ally. These people will save your clothes, so they will save your life or close enough. If you stain something, take it in ASAP so the stain doesn’t have time to set.

Tailor Everything

Do you know why your pants always get gross on the bottom? Because they’re too long. Spend a few bucks on a hem and dryclean less often. Your clothes look better when they are tailored. It’s a good investment.  You will get more likes on Instagram.

Buy The Right Hangers

I went through this in my closet organization post. Be a grownup and toss your wire hangers. Velvet hangers keep your clothes in the best shape. You can buy inexpensive ones from Amazon. Replace ALL of your hangers at once.

But don’t toss all of your old hangers in the garbage. Keep some for line drying and see if you can donate the rest to a local thrift store or shelter.

Also invest in hangers with clips for skirts and pants, if necessary.

I'm interupting your semi-regularly scheduled So Last Week to bring you some very exciting news. So, if you're looking for me to share my fav links of the week, sorry, but I'm taking this full-on narcissist style to announce my newest project, which is a podcast with Ali Levine called Things We're Too Lazy To Blog About. The title is pretty self-explanatory. Every week, Ali and I are going to dish on our major first world problems (spoiler alert: lack of organic kale, why drugstore hauls are impossible for me, and bad malls) as well as blog-worthy topics that would take way too much effort to delve into with words.

Last week, Ali and I had our makeup done at Blushington in Topanga to announce our collab live on social media.

If you aren't familiar with Ali, she is a stylist, television personality, and one of my closest friends. She also blogs and offers styling services to celebs as well as regular people.

The first episode will debut May 8th. We don't have an iTunes link at the moment because it takes a few days for Apple to approve the podcast, (hopefully just a few days- fingers crossed), but there will be links here and on our Facebook page. We are so excited about this podcast and want to make you a part of it. Let us know what topics we should cover and email your requests to ThingsWereTooLazyToBlogAbout [at] gmail dot com. (I know the way I just wrote that out is totally annoying, but are constant spam emails about penis enlargement).
